A very simple question

hi all,

i have a question to ask, since i don't own a dslr, i need to ask it here. pls excuse me if it sounds a stupid question to your standard.

i just want to know is, is it possible to change the aperture (f stop) of a lens even if it is a fixed aperture lens. e.g canon 24-70mm f2.8 lens or canon 50mm 1.8/1.4/1.2. is it possible to change the the aperture to say f4?

does it have a separate ring like focus ring or is a function in camera. example of camera could be 5d mark ii/iii.

pls help me

regards,

Yes, what they advertise is the maximum aperture. In the 24-70 f/2.8, you can set it anywhere between f/2.8 and f/22. In modern (electronic) lenses, like the ones you mention, you control it from the camera. Any modern Canon camera will do it.
Now, ask a mod to erase this thread and pretend you never asked :)

lol....thanks samuel for your answer. never mind being stupid rather than being ignorant.

It can be intimidating figuring out lenses if all you've ever shot on was a camcorder. It's a whole new world, which takes a bit of time to figure out. The best thing you can do is ask questions.

thanks swanny for your response. it is indeed the same with me. i have been making videos using camcorder but now i want to jump into mainstream (since shooting with dslr now is in vogue).

i further want to ask one more simple question by your standards. how do one go about focusing their subject in dslr? i know if its fixed lens one just have to rely on simple focusing. but if i am shooting with say 24-105mm, is it fine if i go the video way for focusing? i.e zooming in full to the subject and focusing and than zooming out to frame the shot?

your answers really help me. though i have not yet purchased dslr, i just wanted to be clear before getting one.

regards,
