"A Verse Before Dying" - AF-100 Western Short

by the way that shot on 2:08 or whatever it is on bartender's face really seems to be the first evidence i've seen from af100 that its dynamic range may in fact be quite good. presumably that's daylight balanced HMI blasting in the old man's face and his highlights are very cinematically held.

That HMI was hitting a piece of foamcore on the floor and was not directly hitting the bartender.

Also, thanks for being so open with the entire process (lighting diagrams, etc.). It's very informative and helpful, to myself and I'm sure many, many others.

Glad you've found it helpful, Mike. Anything else you'd like to see from the shoot?

Other than the BTS video, of which there's over 100GB that I haven't even had a chance to look through yet. :D

I want to say a big THANK YOU for all the work! Shoots are never easy and it's great, inspiring really, to see a team work so well together without egos and get such really great stuff under given budget and time constraints.

But aside from that to edit together a comparion of Ultra16 to AF100, a terrific trailer and the film as well with great sound and music. Well done! Especially LOVE the dream sequence which is just magical.

I saw your team used quite a variety of lenses on the shoot. We all hear the notion of "color matched primes". I was wondering if you had any sort of issues matching shots with vastly different lenses. Did you have to grade for certain lenses or was that a non issue?

We had zero issues at all matching the looks from the various lenses we used. In fact, the subject of lenses didn't come up once in the color suite. A total non-issue, but a damn good question. :D

Actually no, but thanks for the offer. There's been so much to see already and I think you guys are doing a great job keeping us informed.

Anyone know where I can get my hands on an AF100 to "play" with?

Muaha.

Looks like you guys had fun. Thanks for sharing.

And thanks to everyone for offering your feedback! Especially those who refused to hold back. I personally appreciate honesty and I enjoyed reading the posts here on my holiday break.

Sup Kholi! Merry Christmas! You've been quite of late. Curios....(I know you haven't shot with the AF100 yet)...but what's your take so far, from what you've seen/read/heard?

Cheers!

Once again thank you all involved for your wonderful project. You are all pros and know what to shoot, what to keep and what to change. It is your sweat and your creative genius that gave us a chance to see the AF100 in a real life working environment. I appreciate the time and effort you also put in the lighting set up sketches, the lenses used and all the BTS stills. Thank you Barry Green again because you really care about teaching all of us about how to properly use the Panasonic cameras and become better filmmakers. Great, great work.

Same to you, sir!

Yeah, the feature (and development of others) is eating up a lot of my time these days. Trying to wrap principal in January, the big no budget push...

What do I think about the AF100? I'm not so sure just yet. I'd need to put my hands on it and shoot it up for myself to draw a conclusion. I was so impressed with a hacked GH1, I'm hesitant to think the image compares but I'd need to see camera footage first hand. I know it looks fun and I bet it would have been incredible to own this sucker two years ago or so!

Maybe I can bum a test run off of someone and shoot something with it?

Anyone got one in Portland yet? Los Angeles?

I was watching Battlestar Galactica tonight and realized even though they had very limited cameras, it's one of the best sci-fi shows ever made. Think of what they could do with AF-100's or Red cameras? Watching these type of things, shot on older digital technology reminds me that "pixel peeping" is absolutely a waste of time. Getting out there and telling great stories with a good crew is where we should be!

I'm getting one in Full Compass' first batch, so maybe next week or the week after. I also already have the GH2, a set of Zeiss ZF's, and a Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95. Wouldn't mind seeing first hand what better lenses can do with it too.
