A trip to New York

Re: A trip to New York

Wow that stabilization is pretty amazing.

But after seeing your non stable original footage..... may I suggest you lay off the coffee.

;) joke

Re: A trip to New York

Unfortunately, image stablizing software can severely compromise the quality of your original depending on how shaky it is to begin with. The more pronounced the shake, the more it needs to zoom in and the more the quality is compromised.

Not a big deal if you are looking at the footage on a small TV but if you are projecting or watching on a large TV, it is very noticeable.

That's been my experience anyway...

Re: A trip to New York

Yeah, that's what you get when you hand the camera to someone with ADHD... there were so many other shots with a ton of potential, just not enough time focused on any subject, and those were the shots i felt worth rescuing.

any thoughts on 3rd party stabilizers? do you know if Boris or AE has anything comperable?

Happy Editing!

Re: A trip to New York

I've used them all over time and they all have given me about the same results. Having said that, the stabilizer in After Effects is probably the best in my opinion.

Re: A trip to New York

good deal. I just noticed your tagline under your icon!

when in new york, we must have been asked if we were shootign a documentary like 100 times in a day... all of them demanding royalties.

I felt like saying "What, two dudes can't have a nice camera with a HUGE lens and not get static for it?"

good thing i know when to keeop my mouth shut.

thanks for the advice!

Happy Editing!

Re: A trip to New York

This gives me the inspiration to shoot NYC from the perspective of a local rather than the tourister. Cool Music!

Re: A trip to New York

Wow, was the camera man hassled at all? NYC is very, very, very sensitive about video taping these days (especially in the subways) and the union guys up there have no problem grilling you about "what are you doing? what's this for?" I'm suprised you weren't asked 200 times a day. We grabbed our equipment from our motel rooms up there just to load it into cabs and you would have thought we had started a fight  :D

That's another cool (and often mentioned) thing about the camare though, very low profile.

Very cool footage and I agree that the music gives it a great feel. I love New York.

Re: A trip to New York

whats with the drunk guy and his metro card slight of hand trick.
and that window scratch graffiti on the train NEIL .. I see that all the time!

Re: A trip to New York

Hey - tell us more about this flowpod - any users here - it looks cool - maybe I should start another thread about.
Have a look at the video clips on the site http://www.varizoom.com/flowpoddemos.php - the dvx looks pretty good on one of these things 8)

I was looking to get a steadicam but this looks cheaper & does more - is it really any good ?

Re: A trip to New York

I own steady extreme from PROMAX. its ok... but it does the job if you do it right. I'm wondering how the flowpod keeps it's weight at the bottom. anyone know? because, i mean it's a stick without any visible weight at the bottom. or is it heavy bottomed?

Re: A trip to New York

I have the Flowpod. There are 3 available weights that attach around the sfaft. They can be tightened anywhere along the shatf so you can reach the balance point, and have the center of gravity at the handle.

It works well for me. With any stabilizing device it all comes down to practice and ones ability to float while walking too. (hold your breath and tread lightly)

CaptainMench posted some Flowpod shots in the Screen Grabs section a while ago. He has probably mastered that thang by now.

Yeah, I used to live in Jersey, and work midtown for my internship in '02, and i remember hearing on the trains' PA system about tourists taking pictures in the tunnels... getting arrested, bet-down, etc...

I can see how people can get jumpy about those things.

keeping that in mind, we kept a low profile on the Subway.

and who the hell is NEIL??? i see his **** all the time!

Happy Editing!

Re: A trip to New York

Whoa first of all,

Great shots!!! Im a new yorker and I would never thought of doing what you did there.
But also, how the hell did you got that camera in the subway? theres been a new law passed saying its illegal to shoot anything in subways fearing of terrorism.

I'm like, a terrorist is gonna buy a freakin huge 3400 dollar camera and conspiciously shoot at hot spots around the city. YEAH SURE

Re: A trip to New York

Dizkoteck, Thanks a lot!

I had a backpack, and we kept it in there most of the time. Not so much for fear of being yelled at or arrested, but more along the lines of keeping my camera from getting stolen.

When we had it out, it was only for a few seconds, and only in empty cars. (with the exception of that drunk kid with the metro card.)

Thanks again!

Re: A trip to New York

Ok, now i'm really confused! I was in New York and New Jersey a couple weeks ago for 5 days shooting a documentary. Not only did I bring my dVX with me everywhere I went, I had the DVRig Pro on at all times! Brooklyn, Bronx, Harlem, Manhatten, queens, everywhere! Not one time was I stopped on the subways, streets, or anything! I walked right past subway police several times, nothing, a couple of them even gave me a polite nod! I didn't even think about the fact that I may be stopped with the camera! Interesting eh?

Re: A trip to New York

it's been my experiance that it's best to "Walk in like you own the joint." Woprking sound at night clubs, things like that... i walk by bouncers all the time without question. if you are confident enough, people just think you belong there, and know what you are doing.

now if you look all suspicious, like you stole something... as you walk out of Walmart, that little old man will stop you to check your reciept.

try it some time!

(don't get arrested)
