A Totally noob Question..

Can anyone please guide me on how to edit my videos..
I am totally clueless about editing videos..
Please give me ideas on how to start from scratch..
things like..
What i should do first with my video after shooting it..
What softwares to use and which ones should i use first in editing..
Because i have read that you guys use more than 1 software for one project..
Any link to a tutorial or article about editing videos will be a very big help for me..
But of course a tip, straight from you guys, will be much more appreciated..

First decide if your are going to go PC or Mac.
With PC you have Sony Vegas, Avid, Premiere and some other Editing Softwares as you say : ) With Mac you have FCP (final cut pro), Avid and maybe a few others but I would say that most that edit on the Mac platform use Final Cut Pro.
 
For PC, you can get a feel for free with Windows Movie Maker. Its very simple and not very good but you can get a good feel and i think its a good learning tool.

From there there are a host of good stuff.

Again id start and learn with the free its just simpler, then from there you can take those concepts and get something better like vegas, premiere or avid like above posted.

thanks guys for the suggestions. i'm using a PC system now..I have tried vegas and movie maker..But here's the story, in vegas i opened the footage i took from my d90 straight to vegas and i have learned something about putting effects and some kinda stuffs but i dont know what I should do after i do those things..I mean, how do I finish the project? I tried to render it but the movie played slow like it were pictures put together sa gif file..i don't know what term you vid experts call it.but it was slow.and on movie maker the file from my d90 was not opening that's why i haven't really tried it..

I am planning to shoot some stuffs with my d90 and want to put it together to create a story..but I'm totally clueless of what to do with my vids..I really really need some help..I am very eager to know where to start and how to finish a project.I mean from what editing softwares should I start and how will I save it as an avi or mov or anything I can watch in my computer that has a satisfying look and feel like a real video I see everyday in the tv channels i'm watching..

You have so many questions that are so general I don't think it's useful to think they can be solved on a forum. Once you get the hang of editing some material, then your questions will be sharper and more easily answered.

I agree with jonE5 regarding a simpler system. Maybe retry MovieMaker, for instance, but I urge you to get a book that explains how to use it - there will be guides out there. Diving in to Vegas will be daunting. You should also invest in a good book on NLE and perhaps general principles of editing. Books and practice will help you enormously.

Remember, editing itself is a career for some people, and starting out is almost like learning to draw.
 
thanks for the advice damonb..i'll try and start learning in movie maker..and look for a good book to read about editing movies..thanks again..
