A "sound recording" question.

So here's one I've NEVER had a good answer to.

Whenever I go to a live rock concert and record a "live" clip with my iTouch, the video is great and the sound is very acceptable. On the other hand, when I do the same with my HVX200a and use the onboard stereo mic on channel one and a Rode shotgun on channel two, the sound is ALWAYS shitty, blown out and distorted, no matter how low I set the volume controls.

Isn't there some brand/kind of small ext. mic that I could mount on my HVX that could get at least as good of sound as the cheap mic in my lowly iTouch, which doesn't distort?

And please don't say, "You need to get a feed from the sound board." Not possible to do.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need to use a mic that's designed to handle high-sound-pressure levels. Fortunately, those types of mics are also among the cheapest. Look to a "dynamic" microphone.

Barry,
Thanks for your quick reply. Any suggestions as to a particlar make or model of dynamic mic to use for live rock video recording? Hopefully one I can mount into the built-in HVX mic holder.
Again many thanks,
Umberto

wgzn,
Thanks a lot for the mic tip! I watched/listened to your punk band video and was very impressed with the "live" sound, not bad at all. And, as you stated, "no splattering."
Did you mean a Shure VP88. If so, they list for almost $700! Any other suggestions?
Thanks again,
Umberto

i use an attentuator (set to -10) attached to my AT 897 shotgun mic. works great !!!
