A simple Matte?

I have my 'Matte Painting' (Mountains) on top and my Live Plate below it. The Matte is a TIFF image that was skulpted in Photoshop

When I select Darken on the composite layer (The Matte) it blends perfectly with the live plate as intended but....

It blackens out the entire track when not actually on the Matte event.

The cursor only shows the 2 events semaless when on the Matte itself. When it moves off the scene the screen goes black....

What am I doing wrong?

Maybe move the matted events to their own tracks? Just a thought, I'm sure someone else has a better answer.

It disappears because the upper track has become a mask track. If there's no mask, nothing can show through from the lower tracks, which is why you get black.

Perhaps make a matte with a large blank area around it? I don't have any idea if that will help.

Why are you using "darken" blend mode though?

EDIT: fixed "burn" to "darken"

Thanks David; so stretch out the 'Mask Track' over the length of the entire clip?

Shaw; the darken works for me cause its a matte

I'm not sure I follow. I definitely understand that you are using a matte, I'm just curious why you are using darken instead of some other blending mode. Is there a specific reason for this?

I think David gave you the right answer (but I don't use Vegas) but I would have the mask last for the entire time the matte is visible on screen, no?

Instead of darken, you can also duplicate the layer and use multiply for your blending mode and then adjust the opacity. This will usually give you richer blacks, but it doesn't always work. It's worth a try though...

Matt

I'd think you could also adjust the Composite Level envelope of the track whenever you don't need the matte image.

I have found the same problme, and a simple solution. SImply apply a track opacity envelope to the track. Bring it all the way down on the parts that don't have the composite and up for the parts that do have the composite. I hope this makes sense.

Now Im trippin

I have a top layer that is a TIFF image but elements of the Lower Track are showing through (Barely).

What the..................?

Here it is so far

1. Live Plate is overexposed grossly on purpose. I was hoping this would make it easier to key out the sky

2. The little house model is from another movie site; someone elses model

3. I put it onto horizon in scale

4. Then did some work to blend in the composite into the Live Plate

This is the final so far. Probelms I am having are that the Composite is not entirely masking us from seeing into the Live Plate

I have a 15 second MOV of it if I can get a host (My outland FTP is whack right now).

I am still trying to make so the MASK LAYER completely supersedes the LIVE LAYER

Looks damn good so far. I cannot wait to try this.

Sorry to go off topic, but do you mind divulging the site that came from? I'm making some plans for a house model and trying to find as many internet resources as possible :)

Looks like a great start, John. If you had just posted that final pic by itself, no one would have known it was a comp.

Here's a final one for this test

The final 20 second clip looks great; wow.

It has a a little Sleepy Hollow theme, Chruch bells, wind......

Not bad; all done with PS or Vegas. The goal was 'Could I do it?'. Yes

Easier than I thought and with relying on simple Tiff/Jpegs from PS makes the process a ton easier and user freindly

Notice the little bulding highlights from the sunlight! :)

Here is the final composite before CC and Masking
