A short video to try the whole gear

Hi guys,

I'd like to share a video I did just to try out the gear I've been gathering for the last months with a lot of sweat and hard earned money... This forum has been priceless for me and I would very much like to have your opinion and criticism. Please, do not expect a complex story of some sort, this was an experiment to try my stuff.

Please choose 720p or 1080p :)

Thanks !

I almost turned it off after the first minute of too long, unextraordinary shots, but then it got really interesting starting with the scream. I know you said this doesn't really have a story, but all your most compelling shots, the move in on the window to reveal the guy, the pick axe on the rail, etc. were story based. You definitely know how to create tension.

If you wanted this for anything more than the test, I would cut down the beginning a lot. You could also add some slight zooms in post to make your static shots more interesting.

Definitly agree with you about the first shots. They were completely filmed without criteria and just to try different lenses. I really just started thinking shot-by-shot when the scream shot began. Thanks for watching!

Wow, that was impressive. I'm intrigued to know your set-up and how much post was done (color). Great job though, like it was said previously the tension was great!

Hi! I didn't do a lot of CC, just pushed the saturation a bit and added a bit of contrast (just slightly).

About set-up, I used my Canon XH A1s and the SG Blade (RR2). I used two lenses: Zeiss ZF 1.4 50mm, and a Nikon 20mm 2.8. I'm using the Libec LS-38(2A) and a AT8035 for sound. I'm also using a dolly but I can't really remember the name of the company. I'll try to check it but it was cheap and works smoothly!

Thanks!

Ah, I'm looking at getting the Nikon lens you mentioned and your short only adds fuel to that fire haha. What a sharp film, kudos again. I envy the location that you had; looks like the perfect isolated spot for films like this.

I really liked the look of this. Seems like you know how to get some good camera movement to add to the story, and how to use light. That one shot that stood out for me, was the pick along the metal fence or whatever, and the gate opening where the main character stands with the sunlight behind him. That was a very interesting shot. Were any lights used besides natural light there?

Id love to see you do a more thought out and scripted narrative piece. You have some talent, and an ability to create a really eerie feel which is a rare thing at times.

I will agree that your first few opening shots are a bit slow, and definetly need to get to the point a little faster. Edit out some time out of those and move it to the point where the story gets going a little quicker and your in business.

Opening shot Good. Good music.
2nd shot - Jerky camera motion. Well done on lighting the dog and the sky properly.
4th shot - I don't know what to look at. Seems like the movement draws the eye, the right side is in focus and the middle is blurry.
Amazing shot of the tree and power lines.
Shot with the ax- BOOM awesome
Great sound, awesome sgblade use
Kick the door in shot- overexposed

Cool

Yeah, first few shots are really dull, I know eheh. About the lighting, I only used natural lighting. I was trying to find an overcast day, but the sky was actually pretty clean. Still, we were able to shoot later in the day, so lighting was in our favor.

Thanks :)
