Hi guys,

This week I made a short promo-video for a company that wants to promote healthy drinks and to stimulate young people to enter a contest for making your own healthy recipe.

Very easy, quick and low-budget but just wanted to show you guys because you might be interested in seeing the GH3 in another setting than normal.

Here is the link:

Watch in 1080p of course.
1 question:

Of course this is a compressed version, but even in the 'uncompressed' version, the wide shots in the beginning are just not very sharp / detailed, especially the main actor. Why could this be? Is it the fact I shot at open aperture (2.5), or the variable (LCW) ND filter? It was used in every shot, but normally that lens (14mm 2.5) is tack sharp... Couldn't figure out why it looked soft in these shots...

I would suspect the variable ND filter. I've seen several reports and complaints of those seeming to cause unsharp results with several lenses. Try shooting something similar with single strength ND filters and see what it looks like.

Variable ND filters add 4 extra reflective surfaces in front of the lens which can cause unwanted reflections and flare results in addition to possibly affecting sharpness.

I have a few variable ND filters but do not use them on anything serious. I have ND 1.2 and ND .9 filters I carry in the bag, gives me 4 stops reduction and 3 stops respectively (and today I think I'll order an ND 1.5 (5 stops!).

I would agree that the filter is the probable cause, having seen this happen with auto focus lenses. The filter seems to throw off the process.

At the usual youtube viewing size, I didn't notice any objectionable softness in the image... if you were using autofocus, and filters, that may cause some problems. This is a case where probably manual focus, since you're on sticks anyway, would probably be better.

The thing that really bothered me was the table not being 'squared' with the frame, as well as the distant 'horizon' line where the field meets the buildings, and the corresponding tilted trees...

I'm sure the LCW filter 'softens' the image, but I have shot great sharp detailed images with the filter on the lens. So it's not always the case then. Also, I'm pretty sure the shots I'm talking about are 'in focus' and I think I focussed those manually. I do believe that individual ND filters would be much better. Might do that in the future.

Nice rhythm to your edit. Just curious what your settings were? Which bit-rate and picture profile did you use? Did you use auto WB? The image seems to have a pinkish/magenta cast. Did you CC this?

Thanks :)
Settings:
- 50 mbps mov
- Daylight WB
- Natural -2/-1/-2/-1

The GH3 always has a slight magenta cast IMO. It's just build-in.
Also, it was pretty cold outside so the actor actually had purple hands and skin color :D
The footage is color corrected and saturation is added to make the colors 'pop' more and make the fruit look more tasty. Also, the sky was really white and boring at the time of shooting, so I shifted the highlights more to blue, to get at least a bit 'happy' look in the video. This might have to do with it as well.
