a serious movie- d7000

Love it!

What ISO settings did you use? My D7000 movies seem much grainier under the same light conditions.

I forgot- Think it was 1600? Yes, grainer- but kinda in a nice way. It looks like the nikon's skip noise reduction for video.

I prefer grainy look of D7000 footage (film grainy feel) to digital noisy look of T2i or GH1(3) in low light. Don't know about more expensive or newer cameras from Canon and/or Panasonic.

Same here: I shot at ISO 1600 this weekend and was surprised that the noise looked more like film grain than digital noise.

Hey Hunter....what do you think of your D7000 for video? Just curious what your "total" eval/opinion is of the D7000.

I like it, I used it for an hour long interview with it last week and had no issues, I also did a stop motion job on it this week (no video just stop motion) and it worked fine for that too. Im shooting a short doc during the next few weeks on it and will be able to give better input then as its pure video. Overall I like it and feel comfortable shooting it- great stills camera and decent dslr video camera.

What I like:
Built really well
long enough battery life (seems longer than canon 5d but I could be wrong)
Dynamic range is really great, incredible actually (only reason I bought the camera)
Great skin tones
Dual card slots
Codec seems quite good for a low bit rate

What I wish for:
You can adjust audio in camera and it seems to sound good- but there is no way to check your levels in camera (needs visible levels)
720/60p + 1080/30p for overcrank (1080/60p would be icing)
For noise reduction to be better enabled for video (I like the tight film like grain but I could see how some may have a problem with it in high isos)
Aperture adjustments on the fly for lenses without aperture rings (have to turn off live view)
There is some low level banding at near zero black on flat gradients, could be dithered or sampled better for the 8-bit codec (just the extreme low-end)

For me the dynamic range and overall beauty and feel the image is really worth its downsides- its one of the most filmlike images ive seen from a dslr.
Also the camera feels really good in the hands and is very responsive, it doesnt have to think- it just works. Zero lag to enter and exit liveview. Great autofocus (for stills).
I hope nikon will continue to see the potential in their cameras as a video recording device, I think could really do some damage if they keep taking notes.

Thank you for taking time Hunter. Very through....you have confirmed my EVERY suspicion on this camera TO THE LETTER. Many thanks!

You bet they will! And wait for their fully dedicated video large sensor cam ala AF100. Oh, I am sure they are working on it. And it is going to be a real killer. You can bet on that.
