A second look at the FS700

Postmaster

Dark Side of the Camera
Since I got my mitts again on the 700, I have some time to give it a second test ride.

I look into DR, resolution, low & highlights, slomo (of course) and have a better look at, what exactly the 4 new gammas do.

Just for starters, here is a real world scene with pretty high dynamic range.
It´s in the neighborhood of 11.5 stops (was a bit hard to meter, since the light was changing fast, as I run around with my spotmeter)

I lifted the shadows a bit and brought down the lights to legal levels.
I was surprised, that there was more room in the highlights, than in the shadows, that had a pretty flat bottom.

So...

First resolution test. Both cameras (FS100 and 700) at no PP, 25P, Nikon 50mm @ f4.

And yeah, downsampling from 4k is well worth it, as you can see.
Also the 700 is less redish - goodbye skin tone problem.

olol! Nice pic!

Is this the final built or still preproduction?

Will you do some more technical stuff this time, like a resolution chart maybe, or ISO testing, or comparing picture quality of 120, 240 fps to realtime speeds, or some footage of highlight handling of the different cinegammas?

:)

Still preproduction unit.
And yeah, resolution, gammas, low & high light and - of course - slomo.

Frank

I hope I can keep it till 27/26th, cause I´m shooting a short on that weekend - would love to do it on the 700.

Hi Frank,

You don't happen to have tried the Metabones EOS to NEX adapter with it?

With that said, I don't think you use Canon lenses, but if you do, could you take the Metabones for a whirl?

Hey Frank, can you also check the internal / sensor reflections on the FS700 vs the FS100. I saw the Abel Cine low light candle test, and it looked like the internal reflections were much less (a good thing) on the FS700, but it was only 1 candle light, so not sure how it would compare when set against a large bright window.

Hi Frank, you mentioned about the Man of Steel video (which I love) that the quality of the fs700 image is better when there is samarai capture instead of internal capture. Is the image quality better due better resolution or better color after grading?

I'm sure Frank will clarify, but until then, let me just point out that the Samurai records 4:2:2, whereas the internal capture records 4:2:0, so you're getting literally twice the color resolution from the Samurai capture.

Yeah. what Barry said.
Also ProRes is not a long GOP codec and has a higher bitrate.
You can see the difference in complex frames or fast motion.

Hey Frank, just wanted to say that I appreciate the work you're doing!

Just a few questions:

1) Did you use the Samurai for these test?
2) If a higher quality lens such as a Zeiss CP.2 or better, was used in a dynamic range test like the one conducted by Ablecine, could that possibly increase the result of the dynamic range test? Or is that a test that would not be affected by the optics?
3) I see the difference in the footage but to your knowledge, does the FS700 down sample much like the C300?

Thanks

1. Yes
2. Some glass is a hair more contrasty than others, but not a direct effect on DR
3. Yes the 700 downsamples from 4k

Here is a little sneak peak, what the 4k sensor can do - at 4k

It´s just my back yard, so nothing spectacular, but since there are a ton of roof tiles and bricks, it's just what the good doctor recommends, if you look for aliasing and moire.
I focused at the brick wall - Nikon 50mm @f4 ISO500 - all sharpening dialed down.

Straight out of the camera, in 4k glory.
