A Really Frustrating Problem...Please Help!

Hello All!

I have posted before about a partner of mine who has a hackintosh computer. Everyone who responded to my question really helped me. This time we are having a strange problem that is killing us because we cannot figure out what is going on. I am going to try to explain everything, so I am sorry if it runs on...

He is running a beefy hackintosh. 2.6gHz, 8gb Ram, 1tb hard drive, Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS graphics card. He runs Final Cut Pro 6.0.6, and shoots with the GH1.

I am running a MacBook Pro 2.5gHz, 4gb ram, 250gb Hard Drive, GeForce 8600M GT graphics card. I run Final Cut Pro 6.0.6, and shoot with the GH1.

In the past, we shot with my camera and he was having problems getting the footage to capture on his computer. We found that he had to bring the clips into Toast, and convert them from there and then bring them into FCP (when we go to "log and transfer" it completely shuts his FCP down.) We shot a bunch of Autumn clips, and when he went to convert the footage in Toast, it would convert the first clip on the card, and then the rest would be a solid green frame. We tried many different combinations, such as shooting with my camera and his SD card, his camera and my SD card, changing settings in toast, etc. Nothing is working.

In contrast, my log and transfer on my computer works fine. It captures footage off of my card, and his card from both cameras. We have deduced it is not a problem with either camera, or card, there has to be something wrong with his toast.

If anyone could help us, we would be greatly appreciative!

THanks!

Matt

Have you tried reinstalling FCS or repairing disk permissions?

Remove FCS with FCS Remover (google it) and then reinstall.

Also, if you've already transcoded the footage with toast you should be able to just (to keep it organized) move it to your project's folder on your scratch disk, and then drag it into final cut.

Hello,

We have reinstalled FCP and it didnt work. and when we try to pull footage straight into FCP it closes the program just like when we try to log and transfer. Usually, the toast files come in seamlessly, but this time, it will not convert the footage. The problem is that Toast says it is finished converting, and the clips are green frames. It is almost like the files were corrupted during conversion.

Can you please open the program Console and paste from it, here, the log files from the crash?

Hi Ben_B,

I'm sorry, but I dont know what you mean by Open the Program Console, can you explain ho we are to find this, also, is that where he will repair his permissions?

Matt

Permissions are repaired by going to the program called Disk Utility and selecting your startup disk and hitting "repair disk permissions."

The other thing was that when final cut crashes you can then open the program called Console and it will show you logs of what happened. That's how you figure out what's wrong with things...if repairing permissions doesn't work you could post the logs and we could try to figure it out.

Hi,

We repaired his permissions, and it still did not work. the console says:

Ben, thank you so much for trying to help us.

Matt

Seems like a reinstall of Final Cut after removing all old files would have done it...hmm...hopefully you don't need to reinstall the OS but that might be a compartively quick fix...I'll look more at it and see what I can come up with.

Try reinstalling Toast as well, it might be an issue with Toast making corrupt files that are then crashing FCP. Does FCP work fine with other files?

Hi Ben
He is going to try to re-install FCP and toast. FCP works fine with all other files, in fact I can take files from my camera, save it to a portable drive, and he can bring them into FCP. Toast was making files he could use up until yesterday. It was working fine until we tried this new footage, now it wont work at all. So it seems a reinstall is in order.

Thanks!
Matt

Hey Ben,

Do you know anything about the Elgato Turbo .264 HD? From what we've read, it may be a quick solution to the problem. Apparently, the program has no problem reading the files out of the GH1. They can then be converted to H264 to be used in Final Cut.

Let me know your thought on this. Thanks. He wants to buy one today if you think it would be a good fix for his problem.

Matt

The only experience I have with that is that the film department at my school has one and no one ever uses it for anything.

Whats wrong with just log and transfering with Final Cut? Skip toast.

We cant skip toast, the problem we were having is that his FCP would crash when we tried to log and transfer. I think he is going to try the Elgato .264.

He is looking into the Neoscene right not, he is also looking at the Main Concept Transcoder from Panasonic. I think he is still leaning toward the Elgato though.
