GH3 A Real GH3 EVF

Just thought I'd mention that I've been talking to the people at Hoodman (have a few of their loupes on our cameras) about a solution for the GH3.

They've been great but because there's been no availability for them to test with, they're still trying to spec something out.

I was just giving them the specs from my camera (they're not getting the camera <g>) and as soon as I hear anything I'll pass it on.

Zacuto has rigs for the GH3 that include their Z-Finder : Zacuto GH3 Rigs

Those are just pictures. Zacuto hasn't actually produced anything to that will fit the GH3 yet. Which is why I'm talking to Hoodman.

Plus the Hoodman 3.0 is as good as the Zacuto on balance, smaller, much lighter and much, much less expensive.

It would be nice to have a loupe for the GH3, the EVF I find fairly sharp but it's not as helpful as an external monitor such as the SmallHD 4 or Zacuto, but they have their issues too, in that the extra weight becomes a hassle for a prolonged handheld shot, so I could see a loupe providing a balance between the two.

Quote from the Zacuto GH3 web page...

A special GH3 baseplate is being manufactured to be used in the Striker. The current DSLR baseplate blocks the battery door on the GH3. Availability is early December 2012.

So it sounds like the Zacuto will have a GH3 baseplate very soon.

Yup- love the Zacuto EVF- does the trick for operating, especially in daylight shots.

I've compared them directly, & the optics in the Z-Finder are far superior to Hoodman's.

I've got a couple of each and the Hoodman, with the Hoodeye upgraded eyepiece (I think that's what it's called) is as good optically as the Z to my eyes. for small cameras like the GH3 that you can fly around so easily, the difference in weight and bulk is significant.

FWIW, I've been onlocation since the GH3s arrived and haven't really had a chance to get a good look with the camera.

Got back to the VT farm for the holidays, big snowstorm and I got a chance to go out snowshoeing with it, setup pretty well.

I shot hand (shoulder) held in the most contrasty circumstances - bright sun, and snow and 7 yellow Labs, and shot it all with the crappy EVF.

It was actually a lot better than I expected, but I had to rely on the AFS on the fly and deep snow.

I'm going to load a little edit to Vimeo...all slomo, 50mbs.
