A quick look at the Cineroid EVF on an AF100

Joseph from Cineroid was nice enough to meet me with an EVF unit to make sure it works on the AF100 since we couldn't get it to work in 1080i/720p during last week's EVS demo. Thanks to Barry Green's tip, I verified that the SDI 24PsF setting was the problem.

Here's a quick rundown on its features, and I assure you that this is not a promo. Thanks to Ryan O'Hara for hanging with and running camera.

Thanks for posting the video.

Hopefully Joseph from Cineroid will see this: It would be nice if the 4:3 Guide Bar option could be switched to a2.35:1 or 2.40:1 guide bar. I don't know who would ever need to use 4:3 anymore.

I'm in the video! :)
Thanks so much for the tip, Barry!

David, seeing that the EVF image can be flipped, couldn't the current mounting point be used to your preference as-is? It may not be aesthetically pleasing (with the arm coming awkwardly down and over), and more points (a-la SmallHD, on all four sides) would be nice, but it ought to work.

The entire standard-def cable & broadcast industry in America is still 4:3... it's not going anywhere anytime soon! Much as we might wish...

Good point. I guess I figure it's not necessary because I can't remember the last time I saw someone actually watch TV on a 4:3 SD TV.

Standard def needs to go away, or they should broadcast 4:3 signals as letterboxed. That's just my opinion, but this conversion to HD is taking way too long. It took a decade + just to switch from analog to digital. Progress is being hindered.

Well, that's probably because there is no conversion to HD going on. The only mandate was to go to digital. Stations are free to broadcast digital standard-def TV for as long as they want. There's no pressure, and even no interest, certainly no FCC mandate, saying that anyone has to go HD.

I suppose you're right, but the current mounting point is offset to one side of the EVF's top side, making it more likely that the bulk of the EVF body will protrude back into the camera body when underslung. It's doable, but an extra mounting point (favoring the end facing the camera body) would be a great deal more convenient.

Many countries including my own ( New Zealand) broadcast FHA - full height anamorphic - digital.

Basically a squeezed SD image that is broadcast and displayed as 16:9 . You would not want to view letterboxed SD because this option is far more preferable and pleasing (on a 16:9 TV). An advantage to this is system is that it takes a minimal bandwith to deliver the signal (as opposed to HD).

Its a smoke and mirrors type of thing. I master 30 sec. TVCs ( HD) at approx 2 GB and they are broadcast at approx 30mb . Compression rules the airwaves.

Someone correct me if I am absolutely wrong....but I am not even sure if they can deliver true R.T broadcast HD via satellite because of bandwidth / data rate issues.

I haven't shot standard-def in years. I haven't even shot with a 4:3 guide in over a year. SD might still be around but they are excepting 16:9 images all the time now and just letterboxing them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading somewhere that the handle of the AF100 could be removed and in its place is a cold shoe mount. Couldn't you then theoretically attach the articulating arm with the Cineroid on it?

There are three shoes on the AF100. There's one on the handle, there's one under the handle (as you said, remove the handle and it'll reveal a shoe right on top of the body) and there's one under the removable handgrip on the side.

Ah excellent! I cannot wait until I get mine :D
