A Quick Hands-On With The F55

Something else I neglected to mention-- there are color temp presets or you can dial in a specific temp manually.

Does not appear to have an auto WB and certainly not ATW.

Only reason it's not sitting in front of me now is that Sony security guy at the front desk looked pretty tough ;)

I asked for a solid date and got a fluid response. Think Japanese prices and think a bit less. I honestly expected prices today (Friday 11/16) but haven't heard anything and I will be among the first to hear since I can publish them. Just know that the Japanese prices are going to be close enough to allow preliminary budgeting. There is nothing like multiple layers of multinational bureaucracy and coordination with the other quasi-independent international units. That's why I like being self-employed. I make the creative decisions and wife/financial manager tells me to be more creative less expensively. And the deal is negotiated over a bottle of wine. Not so at Sony.

Japanese site says Feb 1, so I would take that to be a good shipping date.

I just formalized my place in line @Abel with cold hard cash.

I found out there's a fair amount of folks who have done the same and therefore are in front of me, so if you're pretty sure, and you plan on making some money back with rentals, might want to get in line.

I did the same last week at Abel NY for the F5.

I know the feeling. I waited too long on the F3 really to achieve any serious rentals. Really want the F55 but unfortunately have no way to predict rental income to put together a reasonable business plan. And yes, we technology writers have to buy the product like everybody else-- no favors or discounts from Sony.

Thanks Ned. Like all, trying to plan..

+1.
Number "21" in line for F55.

Man this is very surprising news- I called Abel LA as Andy suggested during the hurricane and spoke to a guy in sales who said he'd put me on a list as soon as preorders were being taken. No call and there's no info about this on Abel's site. Very disappointed.

I couldn't decide, so it was suggested I could do both and give up one or the other and apply the remainder, so that's what I did.

They are taking $500 on the F5, and $1000 on the F55. The F55 list is shorter, I'm told.

Good idea, I'm leaning to F5 for my work. I can't rationalize paying the difference for global shutter and I'm more interested in 2k than 4k, and if I was going to shoot 4k it would be RAW not with codec. Not only that but I have to imagine we'll be upgrading in 2 years anyway.

Same thing happened to me with the BMC Camera with Abel.

I think the main diference between F5 and F55 will be not only in the recording options and global shutter, but in the distinctive image they produce.
Would loe to see side by side comparison, Time will tell...

Global Shutter is the Big Big draw for the F55 over the F5.

Like Star said we will be looking at the next big thing within 2 years anyway.....there is no such thing as future proofing when there are new cameras to upgrade to.

Now that one Company has broken ground with Global shutter...the others will not be too far behind.
