A Quick Hands-On With The F55

I got to fondle the engineering prototype at Sony NJ today and while I could not take any pix of it nor shoot anything, here are some impressions.

Amazingly compact, yet solid. This unit had an old 85mm prime just to display an image (no news lenses in US) and the weight was pretty hefty. It wasn't burdensome and it, for lack of a better term, felt like a real camera. Nothing plastic about it. Solid. Buttons and controls felt solid. Not all side menu and viewfinder menu options were implemented yet, but everything accessible and easy to change. Even with the viewfinder menus, no need to wade through levels of menus any more because so much can be controlled on the side of camera.

Just saw the LCD viewfinder. Again, no OLED available yet. Adjustable mounting and viewing options. Very sharp for what is no doubt the basic viewfinder.

The PL mount is solid metal (silver on the F55, black on the F5 but it's the same mount). Big metal ears. None of those flimsy plastic F3 ears.

Top handle-- solid metal and attaches firmly. Contains a number of mounting holes which are visible as metal threads set into the holes in the handle. Viewfinder mounts to front hot shoe and there is a top hotshoe.

Very well balanced.

Bottom has numerous mounting holes as well. Many accessories already for F3 will work with it. Definitely the shape baseplate and handles.

Because of this form factor, it will work very well on shoulder. While I didn't see it, Sony had a Fujinon Cabrio lens which they said worked well and made for a very balanced shoulder package.

No recorder. No media.

Did see the Olivine battery. Very lightweight. Maybe a bit lighter than my Dionic 90's.

There will be scopes and most likely false color but nothing is firm yet.

And the price-- Sony USA isn't ready to announce price but they were "working on it" while I was there. Now, working on price isn't the easiest thing in the world when you are a large multi-national corporation from quasi-autonomous international units. I was told, however, that Japanese pricing isn't US pricing. My take-away is that it could be lower than the yen-$ equivalents we've calculated on the board but don't quote me because this isn't what I was actually officially told. It is only a guess based upon the tenor of the conversation.

When there is an actual camera, I will be getting one to evaluate and will gladly invite anyone in the NYC area for a play day. Or we could even use it on a paying gig. You might even get quoted in the magazine.

Any questions?

Ned - I own the Allstar PMW-F3 shoulder mount It was engineered to provide the correct standard 15mm and 19mm rod distance from the lens mount. Will the F5/F55 have the same distance from the bottom of the camera to the lens mount?

What do you mean "LCD viewfinder"? Where does that go/attach? What is estimated price, size?

I guess this...

Viewfinders as revolutionary as the camera

It's ironic that with focus so critical, most operators are stuck with viewfinders and on-camera monitors that offer middling contrast and resolution. Sony changes all that with the F55. A new digital interface has given rise to a brilliant new series of viewfinders.

  • [*=2|left]Amazing OLED: optional DVF-EL100. Don’t let the small size fool you. This 0.7-inch* viewfinder has the incredible clarity of 1280 x 720 High Definition. And resolution is just the beginning. Thanks to OLED technology, you get superb brightness, contrast and response.
[*=2|left]Higher resolution, higher contrast: optional DVF-L350. Take a major step forward in operating with the incredible image of this 3.5-inch* LCD viewfinder. Compared to previous Sony viewfinders, this one has higher resolution (960 x 540) plus ten times the contrast. And the eyepiece flips up for direct monitoring.
[*=2|left]Full HD: optional DVF-L700. This compact 7-inch* LCD viewfinder enables high resolution when shooting in 2K and 4K, not to mention pixel-for-pixel 1920 x 1080 representation of your HD images.

And heres the photo

Yes. That was the viewfinder. It attaches to the front hot shoe of the top handle. DVF-L350

I didn't actually measure the bottom of camera to lens mount distance. Since most F3 accessories are said to be compatible, I dare say you should not have a problem. But I would definitely test it first. I can say that the Shape does work.

I'd be interested to know this as well. As most of the online photos show the F55 with the element Technica F3 riser. Mitch from Abel Cine said he "thinks the height of the lens center relative to the base of the camera is slightly different, which would mean that you'd need a different top plate to the ET riser. Fortunately the idea of being able to swap out this plate for different cameras was part of the original design so it should not be a big deal to buy this one replacement part."

Ned, regarding the LCD viewfinder.. please tell me Sony has implemented their Peaking function in to it like they do on the F3 and EX series? Is the connection on the camera for their EVF a HDMI and can the peaking be sent over it to a non-Sony EVF?

No, thank god. It's a new proprietary connector. I've had nothing but trouble with HDMI.

I think it's a safe bet they know peaking has to be there, and at least to the EX3 level (which is not that great).

I hope your right about them knowing it has to be there Nate. I cant speak for the EX3 but when set to medium on my F3 or EX1, my experience is it's nearly impossible to botch focus on at least a static subject. The "focus in red" on my Zacuto EVF is a joke.

Right. Proprietary digital vf connector. I am certain there will be peaking. But unit I saw was just enabled for viewing.

I think the real question is if it's implemented in the camera body or in the finder itself. Would have implications as to what quality of peaking you get for a given price.

My guess is it's created in the viewing device...the LCD EVF and the 7" monitor would have quite different needs as far as the resolution feeding it and peaking resolution, etc. But just guessing, really.

I shot all day today with my F3 and the Alphatron. Great EVF and pretty easy to keep things in focus thanks to the high resolution and image size. I had Zacutos EVF but in comparison it's pretty bad.

Thanks Ned. The waveform was one question I forgot to ask during the Facebook chat. That's an important feature I'm glad will be in there

No scopes implemented yet and no answer to question of what scopes. I have been campaigning for wfm. There will be false color.

Ned can you confirm: WF, spot meter, histogram, etc.. other types of exposure tools we are familiar with and which ones will be included and possibly any new types of tools like false color, etc.. ?

**note: We just posted at the same time. Ok so false color, any knowledge of others I suggested?

Hi Ned,

A vectorscope with a 2X switch for use with color charts... Essential. I hope you can add that to your lobby list with Sony. That would also be a lovely part of the 1.5 firmware update for the F3!

What about "expanded focus" with 2-4 levels of multiplication - but one that actually keeps the VF overlay information displaying.

No knowledge of other tools but I suspect we will see something beyond just the Histogram. I've been lobbying for WFM in NewF as well as in F3, even to the point of shaming Sony by saying that Panasonic has WFM.

In the limited time I had with the camera (we're talking 15 minutes), I was much more interested in overall impression and in menu structure. It is amazing to see hardware prototypes and then compare them to the finished product.
