A Question for Tascam DR-701D or DR-70D Users about "Slate" Function

I was wondering if any Tascam DR-701D or DR-70D users could help with a question I have about the slate function on these recorders. Can the slate button be pressed at any point during a recording to generate (and record) tone, or is the button just used to access the slate configuration menu which enables/disables automatic slate tone insertion at the beginning and/or end of each recording? And, if the former is the case, does the recorder start recording a new track each time the slate button is pressed, or does it simply insert tone on the audio recording without creating a new track or mark?

Essentially, I'm just trying to figure out if I can press the slate button and have it insert tone at any point during a recording. I've tried looking through the manuals for both of these recorders, but documentation specific to the slate functions and capabilities seems to be pretty sparse.

Thanks!

According to the user manual, the DR70D has an auto and manual slate mode, the auto I assume, activates when record commences. In the manual mode it states, "Press and hold this button during recording to record a slate tone. (See “Recording slate tones” on page 26.)" So I wouldn't think it starts a new file. If you don't already have the manual, download from Tascam

Someone here likely uses a DC70 and can elaborate.

On the DR40 the auto slate puts a tone when you start recording. The downside is that it doesn't put it in front of the prerecord buffer but at the actual start of recording, making the buffer essentially useless.

For FX recording it's not something I would use except for nostalgia's sake since you are starting a new file anyway.
I think the workflow for production would be to feed the output to the camera so you both had a sync tone at the head of each take.

On the DR-60D, manual slate is activated at any time during recording. Push/hold the button, get a slate tone. Beginning, middle, or end. I would assume the 70D and 701D follow suit.
