A question about HDMI out on Canon cameras

On a job, I use 3 GH2s to stream sports events. I convert the HDMI output of the GH2 to SDI and run that into a TriCaster. One of the GH2s died and I tried to use the HDMI out of a Canon t5i but its LCD screen goes black when I plug in the SDI converter. Why?

Can I use the HDMI output of a Canon D1 or D5 and be able to see the video on the camera's LCD screen?

Thanks.

That's more than one question.

The T5i's polaroid goes black when you plug in the HDMI because it is a stills camera that happens to have basic video recording capability and does not have the ability to show a video image on the polaroid while also outputting video over HDMI.

Would it work with a D1 or D5? Do you mean the 1D or the 5D? Which ones? There are several versions....but I don't think it works on any version. Not without Magic Lantern.

But, why do that? Why not use a proper video camera? It could be a very inexpensive camcorder with a servo zoom lens and would work gobs better than using stills cameras with stills lenses to do the job of a video camera...at a sporting event, no less. Panasonic HC‑V770 comes to mind. It's ~$600 and has clean HDMI out.

Anyway, just because your story has GH2's doesn't mean the questions are appropriate for a Panasonic forum. Like Larry said, ask in a Canon forum.

Do not know anything about Canon - this is about the DVX200 - but there is a Canon section on this forum. But it sounds like you need a decent video camera a new DSLR

OK, I'll chime in... Canon DSLR's, pretty much all of them, unless the very latest ones (and ones MAYBE with a Magiclantern hack) loose their "live view" or LCD display when the HDMI output goes active. You can frame a shot, get everything set up, but once you hit record you'll loose it. Drives me nuts. Consider it a Canon "special feature" to bump you into one of their Cinema cameras. I generally am comfortable with the DSLR form factor, but this is just stupid $hit on Canon's part. Pretty sure the HDMI output is clean, but I always use it for a larger field monitor rather than a feed or output to a recorder or when the thing is on a crane and I'm hoping it's looking at what's intended. Other brands (the one that have been kicking Canon's ass) DON"T seem to shut off the back display when HDMI is hooked to something.... hmmmm.... not feeling much love shooting video on a DSLR from Canon, you're not alone!

...why I went from a T2i to the Blackmagic Cinema Camera and DVX200 for video, and why I am moving from Canon to Fuji for stills: Canon doesn't care.

What if...

I split the Canon t5i output with an HDMI splitter and run on side into the HDMI to SDI converter and the other side into an HDMI monitor?

Do I need a passive or a powered splitter?

Why do some splitters make a point of noting 1080p as a feature? I don't want the splitter to alter the HDMI output of the Canon t5i, I just want it to split it.

Would this scenario work? Any recommendations of splitters?

Thanks.

David - time to move it over to the Canon board... really... but in theory splitting the output to a monitor and to a recorder should work. Can't help on a powered/non powered split cable. My monitor has a zero-loss pass through HDMI feature so I can always plug stuff into that and it's worked out OK. Regardless, you still loose the "live view" on the back of the camera and keep in mind even if you can SEE stuff on an external monitor, you won't have any touch screen functionality.
Here's a linky to the hosting site's Canon DSLR Full Frame board: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/forumdisplay.php?166-Canon-FF
I'm over there occasionally, but there are good folks there who log a lot of time on Canon DSLR and this is, after all, a Panasonic DVX board and we're all just trying to figure out our scene files in here!:grin:
