a newb question about lenses I use and if they work on the 5DII

I currently shoot with the Canon Digital Rebel XTi 400D with a variety of lenses I use for it. Would these same lenses work on the 5DII?

I currently use a selection of ingredients for a pie I occasionally make , would the same ingredients work in an omelette ?

try being helpful . . .I don't know about the camera at all . . . or is condescending responses your way of getting through life?

Oh ! Charm will get you nowhere !:Drogar-Evil(DBG)::Drogar-Love(DBG):

There was a message in my condescension.

If you can tell me whether I should use the mentioned ingredients in an omelette - I will tell you which of the lenses you have listed can be used with the 5DII.

From what I understand it's all an EF standard. So yes, they should work. An EOS lens has, historically, always been an EOS lens.*

*Certain lenses only work for digital, but I've only had one.

ok, any lens suited for a Digital Rebel can go on a 5D?

As you won't play my ingredients game I will have to give in and help you out. :crybaby:

What I was trying to point out was that if you want to know which of your 'variety of lenses' will transfer to the 5DII - it would be nice to know which lenses you have.

But in general, full frame lenses (EF) will work fine, EF-S lenses will not (they will work, but not fill the frame) - go through your lenses and see what you have.

I have the following:

Canon 75-300mm EF telephoto
Canon 100mm F2.8 EF macro
Tamron 18-200 mm IF wide angle
Canon 18-55mm EFS

Bear in mind that I am solely interested in using these lenses with the 5DII at first as I acquire stronger lenses. I just want something to work with at first.

Ingredients !!!

Canon 75-300mm EF telephoto - GOOD

Canon 100mm F2.8 EF macro - GOOD

Tamron 18-200 mm IF wide angle - ????

Canon 18-55mm EFS - BAD

ok, that's good because those are the two chief lenses I use . . . the Tamron is a Canon compatible wide angle lens I use on my Rebel XTi

I never use the 18-55mm . . . .that can stay on the Rebel for the wife.

thanks . . .

You need to find out whether the Tamron is full frame or not - the simplest way would be to mount it on the 5D (it will fit) and see if you get excessive vignetting or not.

I have no idea what vignetting is, but I will look it up.

Vignetting is where the edges of the image/frame are dark - even to the extent that the image may be in a circle on a black background.

I just know it works great . . . : )

It works great on a Digital Rebel but the 5D is a different camera !

One other thing to consider is that all you lenses (the ones that work and the ones that do not) will have their field of view changed when put onto a 5DII.

Everything will become more wide angle.

Wides will be even wider.

Telephotos will be less . . . . what's the right word . . . 'zoomy' !

For example a 300mm telephoto will look like a 200mm (not sure of the exact figures, but something like that).

thanks . . . I never noticed any vignetting with the Tamron.

The lenses, like I said, would be the working ones until I buy better lenses . . .

IIRC, for Tamron, DI means it will work with FF, DII is for cropped sensors. For Sigma the equivalents are (I think) DG for FF, and DC for cropped.
Don't, and I mean Don't try to use an EF-S lens on the 5D, you'll wreck the mirror and / or the lens, Independents will just vignette horribly.
