If you, like me have quietly been lamenting the thought of shooting your last roll or sheet of film in the near future, be it colour of black & white (or unlike me, you're shooting motion picture film), there is hope: one of the 4 factories in the world that can manufacture colour and B&W film is set to be demolised end of the year, taking its 60 year old equipment with it.
BUT, there is a plan, not just a plan but it is in motion. FILM Ferrania.
For those of you who have a much richer analogue history under the belt will remember Ferrania as that little label on a wide variety of films "Made in Italy". For those of you who aren't, Ferrania started out as a nitrocellulose factory, providing the compounds for WW1 explosives. War ended, focus shifted to Celluloid which is nitrocellulose with cotton camphor. Long history later, Ferrania produced some sought after cinema films as well as stills films. Some might even remember the slogan "feel a bit Fellini". Probably its biggest success as said by a top 3M exec (yes, that 3M, who bought the company decades ago) was to be a film supplier for label films, meaning you buy your film from Ferrania, and sell it under your own name brand.
Stopping the story before it gets too winded, a couple of people have come together and figured out that they could scavenge parts from the big machines and create a smaller machine, a "Goldilocks market plan" for the future. Traditional film manufacturing is suffering due to economies of scale - they were built to provide billions of meters of film, but today the market only needs millions.
They need your help, go pledge your support over on Kickstarter. Pledge packages includes film of various formats as well as processing if you like shooting 8mm. The more money they can raise the better. Tell your friends who enjoy film for what it is and who'd like to continue to shoot film.
