GH4 A Matching Camera For…….. Run and Gun and Events

Next week our local Panasonic Rep and I will be getting together to prepare for a Tampa Bay Panasonic Camera Users Group meeting on May 25[SUP]th[/SUP], the topic of the meeting will be matching the AG-DVX200-4K camera to the GH4-4K camera. Research is still being done but chances are the scene files created by Barry Green or the “Like GH4” scene file offered by Panasonic will be used for this demonstration.

If this works, GH4-4K owners will have what’s been missing for them, a traditional video camera for multi camera shoots, run and gun and events that matches their GH4-4K cameras.

Not sure what this means.

If it works I'll try to get our Panasonic Rep to spell out what we did and what we changed to make it happen. Matching the DVX200 to the GH4 opens a lot of opportunities for Multi Camera Shoots that aren't a headache for the editor in post.

Eager to see what becomes of this. I'm aching for a broadcast-level upgrade to my AF100+Samurai, and I doo like my Panasonics, but it's been extremely difficult to reason with the DVX's size, weight, inflexibility, and lack of internal recording heft vs. the FS5. There's much to be said for easy matching in live/post, though... time=money.

We all know that 2 identical cameras if set up the same will produce identical images, that’s why many DP will insist on using identical cameras for multi camera shoots. The problem is a particular camera may not be suitable for every situation. For example, you may need a traditional video camera with a Zoom Lens for a “Run & Gun” scene; the next scene may call for a DSLR or Mirrorless camera with a super fast lens.

Enter the Perfectly Matched Pair, Panasonic’s AG-DVX200 and their GH4 both 4K cameras that can be matched perfectly. Hmmm, sounds good but how is that possible? Panasonic made it possible by creating a special Scene File for their AG-DVX200 camera referred to as Like GH4. We tested it and recorded our test to prepare for a Panasonic Users Group meeting hosted by Panasonic; their representatives will show our members how to use it. Check this out. https://vimeo.com/167443202

BTW, we recorded our test in 4K on a Video Devices/Sound Devices PIX-E5 4K Monitor/Recorder.

For those who use the Leeming LUT with the GH4, Visceral Psyche Films has released a version for the JVC LS300 pro video camera, a genuine 4K MFT successor to the Panasonic AF100. The full range of Lemming LUT's are available here:

http://www.leeminglutone.com/

Leeming LUT One is well-known in the Panasonic GH4 community as one of the best solutions for achieving consistent, high-quality images utilizing the camera's maximum dynamic range. For the JVC LS300, this LUT is calibrated for use with the J-Log1 profile to give your image the best starting point for further grading and esthetic refinement. In addition, Leeming LUT One may be used to match LS300 footage with the GH4 and other supported cameras.

To develop this LUT, I worked with Paul Leeming on testing and evaluating a wide range of LS300 footage, taken in both natural and artifical lighting conditions. The results of this collaboration satisfy all of my requirements for a standarized post-production workflow that makes full use of the dynamic range of the LS300's J-Log1 profile. It is provided in a format compatible with a wide variety of editing and grading tools and can be flexibly integrated into virtually any type of post-production workflow.

^^ Interesting!

I bought Paul's LUT for the GH4 last October/ November, after seeing the development here on DVXUser. I hadn't kept up on what he was doing, and I wasn't aware of the "extensions" of the LUT approach, like the Sony A6300.

I just picked up a Canon 5D3, an A6300, and a GX85 in the past 3 weeks. I also have a Canon 7DII, a Nikon D810, and a Nikon D5500. It would be interesting to be able to get to a similar, base "look" with all of them.

Or if he went the other way, I am sure a lot of people would be thrilled to be able to match the Canon 5D3 look! Even after shooting the Nikon D810, I just love the look I get out of the 5D3. The first RAW video images also blew me away, compared to everything else.

The Canon 7DII also pretty great AF in video mode, plus 2 Digic processors. If we could get Magic Lantern RAW on that, along with good AF....

Damn Canon. They have/ had all of the tools, all the finance guys care about is maintaining current income/ profit ...... :(

Cheers!

I’m a GH4 owner and have always liked the images from it using the Natural Profile however I also find that the shadow areas fall off very quickly into black. Now that I have a Panasonic DVX200 with Panasonic’s “Like GH4” scene file installed, I’m delighted that my 2-GH4’s and my DVX200 match https://vimeo.com/167443202 on the other hand I’m starting to wonder if there might be an even better way to match these cameras, one that would solve my concern about the shadow areas.

I’ve been watching the Lemming LUT thread and thinking that one of Paul Lemming LUT’s might be a great idea for the Panasonic DVX200. Do you think he might be interested in creating one?

He will definitely create one if somebody with a DVX200 helps him get footage of an X-rite color chart. Contact him and he will tell you what kind of shots to get of the charts so he can create a LUT for the camera based on the color of each swatch from the chart.
