A Mac Pro

Hey,

I'm going to be getting a Mac Pro in June and I was wondering if the Two 2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 'Nehalem' Processor" with 12gb of RAM is good enough to be doing Post-Production on? My limit is $5000 and I'm getting the student discount of -$300 so what do you think?

Thanks,
Dak

Plenty good.

You can save a bunch of money by getting your RAM from someone other than Apple.

I would question whether you need 12GB of ram. I'm running 8GB and everything runs smoothly with no bogging down what so ever.

That's enough ram to fill a sheep pen, I had six gig in my Macpro and during testing removed 4 gig, so now back to factory 2 gig,, all runs good...
Six gig or so is plenty to run FCS apps, and PS and a few more apps all at the same time...

use what you save on ram to get two more big internal HDD's , great for editing.

Cheers

i'm pretty sure the new mac pro runs better in six's. Its tri-band which is why it come standard with 6gb of ram. So, going off of that, 24gb would be the most efficient use of ram. I have 12gb, and got a reasonable deal at macsales. Though I will say i had 2 months of problems from them. 1st set of ram was faulty. Did an RMA and got another set. 1 stick out of the bunch was completely different. 5 were blue, the other green. I did another RMA, and they sent me again, the wrong ram. I pretty much gave up since people there are incompetent. The ram is working now, but good communication could have gone a long way. I give them a 4/10 in customer service.
