A little confused from another post on Shutter.

I understand Shutters and what they do,,Ect..Ect..
Another post was talking about the Saving Private Ryan look using a high shutter speed. Now with the DVX100a, Iam asuming that the 1/48th shutter for shooting 24p and 24pa is synco scan or what. I always leave the shutter at the 1/48th. Also any reason for changing this speed? Sorry if this is a dumb post..

i think in the thread you mean there is a quite extensive explanation by barry green also. otherwise you find it on another thread for sure.

shutter in film terms means the amount of time the film is exposed to light.
a slow shutter (1/12th) leaves the light more time to hit the film. as an effect you will see a lot of motionblur (cos more motion is captured in that time) and you will have to stop down a lot or you will overexpose.

a short shutter (1/1000th) only gives the light a tiny fraction of a second to hit the film. now the motion will be crystalclear (on a photo) and stroblike on film (but also very sharp). beacues only little light is exposed you need a lot of it. a short shutter in the dark will simply expose to black.

1/48th is standard for your 24fps.
if you experience stroby pans you might wanna try a little slower, to increase motionblur (but beware of going too low or the blur takes over) or higher like in private ryan for another effect.

just play around with it. for dreamsequences often a slow shutter like 1/12th is used, while sports often are shot in 1/500th if slomo is not planned.

Now whats a good way to test out the "Saving Private Ryan" or the "Gladiator"fight agains the Germans" scene?

I heard shooting a water fountain, any other ways?

..just shoot someone runnning around pretending to be in an action film.. set shutter @ at least 120th close to 200 would be pretty good overall

Iamaloser,
So what everone is saying is that the DVX is default to a 1/48th shutter speed. Is that correct?

No, 1/50. That's shutter "Off." But there's hardly any difference between the two.
