Just took out the a7RII for a little gimbal test using manual / vintage lenses that don't have image stabilization, and only depending on the a7R's internal IBIS.

Looks liek a 2 handed gimbal, maybe a Ronin M?
?only depending on the a7R's internal IBIS
But then why ?
But yup, sounds just too good![]()
Apologies! I think I didn't specify what I was trying to say haha.
So... for me, with literally any other camera I get lots of "micro jitters" that enter into the footage. I wish I could operate or set up my gimbal to knock those out, but I've been unsuccessful and have to consistently depend on warp stabilizer (or new modern lenses with IS... which I loathe) for gimbal footage (Until now, it's usually been the Pocket camera or the a7S).
This was the first time where I popped on the A7RII, made sure Steadyshot (IBIS) was on, slapped on a vintage Canon FDn 35mm F2 lens, and rolled out. Came home, looked at the footage and my jaw kind of dropped lol. I was jostling that gimbal around like crazy. I mean, really, very little care was taken into how I was balancing it, ESPECIALLY running backwards.
So, in terms of getting something straight out of camera that's decently steady on any gimbal? A7RII is kind of a game changer I think. The FF and 4K aren't lookin too shabby either!
EDIT:
The gimbal I'm using here is the Varavon Birdycam 2
If I got this footage handheld, I think people would be taking out loans left and right to get a camera like this lol. It's still pretty dang solid just handheld as well. I think I'll try that next. I'll also try out the 50mm and 85mm on a gimbal, and see how it handles.
Great test and great looking footage. I'm just amazed at the apparent dynamic range this camera has. Very tempted. footage from this cam looks better to me than the fs7. And for motion, hands down this looks closest to film. does anyone else notice the nice motion?
I feel this is the case with most Sony Stills cams, like the a7S or the a7R / a7R II. Buuuuuut, I do something really not many people do. I leave my shutter at 1/45 rather than 1/50. Every single person I know shoots the a7S or other Sony stills cams at 1/50, which has just barely too much of a staccato motion to it. It doesn't feel silky or smooth. 1/45 is a really good place to be in. Gives it a nice silky motion without any jitter / "staccatoness".
