Well All, I am finally rested up from the weekend before lasts 48 Hour Film Project in Greensboro, NC. I woke up at 9:30 am on Friday and didn't sleep until 11:00pm on Sunday night. It was definitely interesting.
(***For those of you who dont know what the 48HFP is, you start Friday night at 7pm and have exactly 2 days, until sunday at 7 pm, to write shoot edit and turn in a short film no longer than 7 minutes. On Friday night at 6pm they randomly draw genres to give each group so that noone has the opportunity to write ahead of time. They also give you a line of dialogue you must include, a character and that characters job.***)
My group was given Mockumentary. Our line of Dialogue was "Now your making sense". And our character had to be a Caterer named Sam Tuomi. And our prop was a check.
The story we came up with is basically a Mockumentary making fun of "Pageant Type" parents. Sam, the caterer, just put out a new line of cookies and is looking for a child to star in his commercial. The mokumentary makes fun of how crazy these pageant parents can get.
So now for the technical stuff. I used my HVX200, stock lens. Our microphone was a rented Rhode NTG2. Our one location was a small theatre. The only lights in the whole room were can lights that were pointed on the stage and we couldnt adjust them per the owner. OPf course the lighting on the stage looked nice but when I turned the camera around to see what I was working with in the seating area.........HVX nightmare. Nothing but black grainy footage. Unfortuantely since we only had a group of three and no light kit (originally tried to plan to shoot all outside to eliminate it since we didnt have one). With nothing else to do I went to Lowe's and purchased a stand with two work lights. I am very happy with what I was able to pull off with crappy equipment. I must say having my laptop with OnLocation allowed me to see for sure what my scene file tweakings were doing to the image better so I could adjust.
Again, understand that everything that could go wrong did. Very small very inexperienced group (I was called to be DP on Thursday and the event started Friday, I didn't know the people). Vimeo quality is horrible.
Let me know what you think.
