I **** you not,

Me and a buddy know the Flaming Lips guys and have filmed them 3 different occasions. So we were at the free show in gainesville florida tonight, and everything went well......till we got home. I went to look at the footage......and apparently a laser shot out from the stage clipped my DVX a friend was using head on! My HVX was unharmed, but i can actually see the very moment on the mini dv when the laser beams hit the lens i suppose head on....and it left 2 scars on my tape and viewfinder....permanent! 2 little vertical lines just to the left of center. Has anyone ever had this happen to them? or even heard of such a thing? Did i just permanently f-up the cameras ccds? Anyone know where i am gonna hafta send this....is it even fixable......and if anyone has had their camera fixed for this reason, is it just gonna be cheaper to replace the camera......i hate to think that, but i know its just not good! kinda freaking out right now. Someone please cheer me up and tell me i can have my camera back for less than a grand......!

I remember reading a story on here a while back about something similar happening to someone who was doing footage for some sort of service that uses lasers (maybe medical). From the sounds of it, those concentrated beams can zap a CCD. Sorry to hear about that, guess its worth calling up a service center to see what they say.

The instructions do mention not to point at the sun and a laser can actually be much more intense. Then again, any legal show should not allow lasers > 5mw to reach eye level (although this is rarely followed). But that still might be enough, esp if it holds its position.

so does anyone know how much a new ccd is gonna cost, and how long it will take to service? the technical support office for panasonic (the 800 #) :zombie_smiley: apparently was hit by the flood, and is out of order right now! and all the service centers are all closed today for a holiday......grrrrrrrrrr! :crybaby: please someone give me some ideas on how much.........a new dvx is roughly 2k now........do i just need to get another one???:crybaby: :crybaby: :crybaby:

OK... if I remember correctly (which I may not), you're looking at $800-$900 if the CCD's gone. Don't quote me on that, but I think I remember seeing someone else talking about it.

Someone with more knowledge on the subject, PLEASE help out. Sounds like the dude's stressing over it, and for good reason!

i dont blame the lips. its our bad for being in the wrong place when that laser hit! I am not stressin tooooooo hard, but anyone with any clues on the technical aspects of cost and time to replace the ccd...please help! I talked to someone at panasonic today who wasnt sure but said roughly 500 or less and 2 weeks or so......but he said he wasnt sure. no one ever had one replaced???

for 900 bucks.....i will just probably buy a new one:furious3:

anyone?????

If the laser was powerful enough to damage a CCD, then it was probably powerful enough to hurt someone's eyes, too.

You might want to pass along a copy of the clip to the people who put on the show, let them know of the damage to your camera, and also remind them that they're lucky it wasn't someone's eye.

As they say, it's all fun and games until somebody loses an eye... :-)

But seriously, they really need to know that they're running lasers that are potentially harmful.

Don't know about your work status or {if} you have production insurance but there's always the "hobby-as-business expense" write-off for gear upkeep.

Just a thought - a friend who's not incorporated just had to get into some very creative bookkeeping for '06 taxes.
