Hello, is there a good stereo microphone to add to my handycam (camcorder)? I will need it to rec sounds of rainforest. Max budget is around $200. Thanks

Thanks, but it is too much expensive. Is Sennheiser MKE-400 not stereo mic?

No, the MKE-400 is not a stereo mic. It is a single microphone capsule/element that is wired to output to both input channels of your camcorder.

You might be better off getting a hand-held recorder like the TASCAM DR-40 instead. I suggest this because ambient sound beds such as the rain forest you mentioned are not typically recorded in sync with the video. Most often, those sounds are recorded separately - sometimes at the same time using a separate audio system, and sometimes at an entirely different time from the video footage - and are then edited alongside the video to create the full picture. By getting a hand-held sound recorder with built-in stereo mic array (be sure to get ample wind protection!), you can set the recorder up in the forest and let it run for a while, then choose the best parts to use in your final video. Plus, you'll have better control over recording levels, and you'll likely get better results than trying to record that kind of sound internally with your camcorder.

it is too much complicated for me. In your opinion can I rec good sounds with Sennheiser MKE-400 even if it is not stereo?
Thanks

You could try this :

I should note that Azden as a brand is often frowned upon as not pro level gear. But check the reviews yourself and the price fits. Azden seems to be upping their game lately so you might get lucky. Did I mention might?

Now -> having giving you an answer to the question you asked (except the 'good' part) I am going to venture that you might be best served by taking the advice offered above this reply and looking at the recorders suggested for the reasons suggested. Just sayin.

Whatever you decide -> good luck.
