A good camera for home videos?

So it's my big sister's birthday tomorrow and my parents want to buy her a video camera because she just had her first baby so they can take some home videos of the kiddo. However they're trying to work with a smaller budget of $300 or so and most of my camera knowledge is in the prosumer range. I imagine HD and 3CCD are out of the question at that price (right?), so I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on cameras.

Also, I can't imagine my sister getting into video editing, so what do you think about cameras that record straight to DVD or hardrive/removable media, or is sticking with miniDV still the best way to preserve the footage for the long haul?

Thanks in advance for any help.

My aunt isn't too computer savvy and loves her DVD camera because she can just pop the dvd into the player and watch the family videos without having to hook up any cords to the camera or anything.

I'd say for someone that just wants to watch some home video's. A camera that records straight to dvd may be a good choice... I don't know a whole lot about them though, just my opinion.
