He says that artists of today have far surpassed yesterday's artists.
He said that after seeing hundreds of thousands of pieces of modern art.
drawn and painted art of today far exceeds that of yesterday.
He even said that the amateur artist of today are greater than the masters of the middle ages !!!!

He says art has evolved a lot.

ME PERSONALLY I DONT THINK THAT THE CORE OF ART EVOLVED. THINK THAT THE MASTERS FROM THE PAST ARE GREAT EVEN TODAY, because they are original, complex, authentic, creative, sophisticated. The masters are timeless (Shakespear, dali, mozart, kubrick, chaplin, bresson,
The technology can help people achieve a certain look but it doesnt really add art value. The core, soul of art is what i mentionned (originality, complexity , etc.)

ANY THOUGHTS ?

Thanks in advance

Who's to say he's right or wrong?

Who's to say todays' are better or worse?

Who's to judge and evaluate art?

Art is the only element in existence where there are no hard facts, no truth no lies, no right and no wrong, only, and only in the eyes of the man watching, which is in itself what makes art the unique touch in life that it is, it's subjective.

Better musician : celine dion or mozart?
better director : stanley kubrick or edward wood

There are criterias of value of arts : originality, complexity (sophistication), creativity, emotions.

Deleuze, I don't agree. There are no criteria to evaluate art. Only subjective evaluation, only. It's just like evaluating the beauty of a woman.

I agree, people will argue John Bonham is the greatest drummer who ever lived, I ask them if they ever heard of Virgil Donati. Then the discussion turns to: well, John Bonham played from the heart with raw emtion and Virgil is too technical. Which makes the discussion subjective and un-debatable.

cinema = Stanley kubrick has more artistic value than edward wood.
music = pink floyd has more artistic value than britney spears.
painting = Dali has more artistic value than a paint by number kits.
philosophy = foucault has more philosophy value than a bachelor student who doest have particular talent for philosophy

John bohman and virgil donati have more artistic value than the drummer of the garage band on my street.

Oh i must be wrong, the drummer of my garage band on my street must be better.
I must be wrong A painting number kits has more artistic value than a paint by numbers.

All the above would be subjective ?

poetry : the sun is round and yellow. My taylor is rich. I have a big headache. My little girl is poor. My stomach is like a big baloon.

This poetry is better written than Shakespear, Rimbaud, Verlaine, Ezra Pound. Its more artistic. I have all the right to say that it has more artistic value than the greatest. Thanks for the nice find. I think i learned something.

That's pretty much textbook reductio ad absurdum/appeal to extremes, that is.

I do not call art all that you call art, which is simply mechanical reproduction, imitation of nature or of other people, or simply fantasy or an attempt to be original. Real art is something quite different.... In your art everything is subjective—the artist’s perception of this or that sensation, the forms in which he tries to express his sensation and the perception of these forms by other people.... In real art there is nothing accidental.... The artist knows and understands what he wants to convey, and his work cannot produce one impression on one man and one impression on another, presuming, or course, people on one level (GURDJIEFF)

Rubbish??????
