I'm in the middle of production of my new film Mask of the Antichrist. It's an Endtimes action thriller we're shooting on the DVX100. This is one of the frame grabs from the site. You can see more at the actual site http://www.the4thbeast.com. We plan to do several other action films with the DVX100. I love shooting with it.

looks like 16:9 letterbox squished to 2.35:1   - you shouldnt do that man, people will notice. either crop it to the ratio you want, or display it as regular letterbox 16:9. other than that good luck with the film :)

Saw the trailer and I was wondering. Where your muzzle flashes on the gun shots real, or digital effects?

Re: A framegrab from the Mask of the Antichrist fi

i thought that too. 1st guess i would say they are not real. not only due to them not looking entirely convincingly real(dont get me wrong here, they actually look pretty good, just not completely real to someone like me who notices stuff like that), but due to the fact that its a lower budget production, and my guess is they probably wouldnt have any sort of clearance to be shooting off blanks in a suburban/ city environment.  but i could be wrong.

Yes, there is a squishy problem here.

Also, on the muzzle blasts, you might want to reconsider the look of them. As IAL stated, they actually looky pretty good, but consider altering the blast between shots. 1st shot has a muzzle blast, second has barely one, 3rd shot has none...

I'd also consider making portions of the muzzle blast more transparent.

Just my HO

I have all the footage in, how to I get rid of the squished effect in FCP? I imported everything via FCP's widescreen function so what should I do to take that away then crop it.

Also those flashes were done in AE. I get mixed results. Some people think they're incredible some people do notice that they don't look entirely real. I'm working on that. But how to unsquish the image my main question now.

The curse of the filmmaker and asking filmmakers! :D They look really nice; it was a humble opinion. :D :)

Well, I kind of figured that the muzzle flashes were digital, but the fact that I had to ask to be sure tells that they are pretty decent. Anyways, there is a program that is supposedly good at recreating muzzle flashes, and I was wondering if anyone here has used it, or heard about it before. Here's the link...

..theres also "particle illusion" by wondertouch

http://www.wondertouch.com/default.asp

imho its a simpler and less eveplved program, but can still give some good results for simple effects if tweaked right.

Thanks, that program is awesome!

I've actually heard of AlamDV. My friend uses it for his stuff so I've seen some of the stuff that's been done with it and it looks good. I'll download the demo and check it out. They only have the Mac OS9 version but if it works on my computer that's fine. By the way I did find out how to unsquish the image. I hear the DVX1000a handles 16:9 so much better.

I dunno man.. the frame doesn't look good at all. The lighting is overblown, looks like it could have been shot on a Sony or Canon cam. It just doesn't have that deep-rich looking color we're used to with the DVX

That's the look it's supposed to have. A pulp indy action thriller isn't the same as T3 or Matrix even. This film is El Mariachi meets Matrix (Some say it's El Mariachi meets Left Behind) but I wanted a certain look. The movie can't change from this look then to pro lighting and deep rich color. This frame is from a scene where the lead meets a hooker on the street. The shot is perfect for the scene. The whole scene looks this way. I'm not a point and shooter. I am specific and detailed all the way down to the red dress the hooker wears (because of the way the DVX100 picks up red in Cinema mode). You have to see the movie to understand it. It's street level not Hollywood. It the raw action and look of the indy action films not that over budget stuff Hollywood puts out. No offense. I like Hollywood movies too. And wait until you guys see the new trailer.

I would like to see the new trailer for this, hopefully in slightly higher quality...? (the one currently up there is so low-res that the muzzle flashses just look like little blobs of white to me). So far, the action shots look really nice, but the way they're edited in the current trailer seems sort of off. Also, you might want to consider a change in the font for the titles. I personally think that big, bold letters work better for an action movie, whereas the "slimy" look of the ones you have right now are more suited for a horror flick.

On another note, I'm curious as to why you chose the "hooker" shot to post as a frame grab. It's not a bad shot or anything, but on your website, there are a ton of small screenshots that look a whole lot cooler.

.... Speaking of which, why are there are always hookers in indy action films anyway? I mean, did you really need a hooker in the story....? I guess I'd have to see the whole thing. Oh well.

Other than that, looks like a great job so far. Can't wait to see more.

Re: A framegrab from the Mask of the Antichrist fi

Re: A framegrab from the Mask of the Antichrist fi

btw.. i assume some of the higher quality looking shots from your webpage are not from the DVX but rather a digicam. Correct?

Also. Indie filmmaking doesn't automatically mean substandard image quality. It's been associated as such simply because a lot of it is.. but it is hardly a "must-have" trait to be titled an indie flick.

Hookers lend a certain "street" feel to the film especially something like this. I wish I could've shot through the week to get that hustle and bustle of Michigan Avenue as a back drop. When used well like in KOD (Kiss of the Dragon - Jet Li) they make for excellent supporting characters and plot devices. Even in the Bible and in literature. They represent temptation, danger and hopelessness. You ever read those fairy tales where the princess is rescued by a knight in shinning armor. In real life princesses have security guards. Hookers are the chicks no one cares about. This opens up a lot of story possibilities as well adds a certain amount of sexual tension between the characters and can be a powerful dynamic if used well.

Most people doing what myself and some of us are doing don't know this. They throw a hooker in because they've seen it before, but they don't really understand the hooker "archetype". It comes off as sexplotation and makes the character one dimensional and obligatory.

As for why I used her picture instead of others? The cover was too big to upload while this framegrab was not. Not to mention it was pretty new, at my fingertips and frankly I think Niki (the actress) is really cute. :)

There will be more framegrabs though. It's just a tedious task to me. Basically I love the editing but that framegrabbing stuff is annoying. But hey if you want people to see you're stuff you got to put it out there right? And laziness doesn't get things done. I do plan to modify the trailer and add better letting. Give it a few weeks. I'm on dial up so I have to go to my producer's house to upload it.

Only the framegrabs are from the DVX100, the other pictures are from the photoshoot we did and were shot on a Canon digital camera for use in our articles.

Some of those shot are low quality because of how they were saved but I've got goodies on the way. As far the look, it's not about low quality, it's about the feel. No big lights unless needed. Shooting in alley's and side streets. The main streets are simply to define location. The women are attractive but not overly made up. The lead is tough but not born to be an action hero. (Most of us aren't). I stayed away from much of the Hollywood stuff even though I had it at my disposal. (SMS is here and my producer and other friends have access to all sorts of things). The only thing we do have is a special effects guy who does our F/X make up and we talk to him about things of that nature.
