A First Look @D90 in Videography mag

i agree with most of it, number seven especially of course, but i'm not sure about the sharpening and the compensation. i find the image to be a little soft without sharpening, and since there are so many artifacts it's hard to do it in post. i tend to use 2 or 3. as for compensation he does have a point, but i also think that the camera overexposes everything in auto so i use -1 instead and the image becomes *much* easier to grade that way (i also use a custom curve in camera that lifts the shadows a bit). also it seems like the camera might just as well increase the iso instead of changing the shutter speed if you increase the exposure, depending on where you are on the proprietary ev scale it uses. has anyone tested this at all? otherwise using +2 then locking at a bright surface would be the best workflow i guess.

Matt. The plug in rescaler is giving me weird artifacts. Like little gouges in the picture?
I put the effect on some clips in my time line, rendered, and it looks bad. Is there a procedure I'm missing? Everybody else is having no problems with it.

good article...I am surprised by this:

"All current CMOS-based cameras are susceptible on some level to rolling shutter artifacts. The Canon HV20 exhibits both skew and jello quite clearly. It's not hard to make the Sony EX1 show skew with a fast pan. Even the RED One has skew issues, seen in whip pans and quick dolly moves."

I had no idea of this...off course, like the article states...in the d90 it is a bit more noticeable. Yet, there is not one day that I regret purchasing my d90. I love it to pieces...it's been years since I've carried a camera with me everywhere I go. The only "fun" camera I've had has been my ol' trusty super 8 Canon 1218...it has been replaced by the d90.

Rick, so these are unprocessed clips in a 720p timeline? Or how is it set up? Can you post a frame grab?
/matt

I don't know. I just put the clips in the time line, and FCP asked if I wanted to change the timeline to match the clips. I said yes. I think so. How do I post frame grabs?
