A FEW new Panasonic cams of interest

Re: A FEW new Panasonic cams of interest

Yeah, I saw that, but it looks like it was edited while I posted my reply. It said "can" when I typed the post.

Re: A FEW new Panasonic cams of interest

just my 1 cent regarding shoulder vs small cameras -- i was shooting now three days with my DVX on a DVrig Pro, and even though i was quite satisfy with it (lots of walking with the camera..) i found myself, in some points, missing the flexibility of the non-shoulder mount operating method, what made think: shoulder cameras - never again. especially now when i have this sweet DVrig, i just hope to have more and more great stuff coming in this format of small cameras. the benefits are endless. technology-wise, things are getting smaller and smarter, which allow developing in this direction.. so i sure hope for a small DVX200!!!

small and sleek. though, you know i love the brick like feel and look of the DVX

Re: A FEW new Panasonic cams of interest

Back to the original topic of the variety of new Panasonic cams. I just read the "first impression" review of Sony's replacement for the TRV950 at camcorderinfo.com. While we all may debate the value of that site, if this is not too far off the mark, then it seems it's not going to sell well and the forthcoming GS400 is going to be the new TRV900 (the beloved predesessor of the TRV950) with additional features.

http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content/Sony-DCR-HC1000-First-Impressions-Review.htm

Looks like Panasonic is poised to beat Sony not just in the 1/3 inch chip category (DVX100 vs. Sony PD170/VX2100) but the 1/4.7 inch category as well (GS400 vs. TRV950/HC1000/PDX10). Wow. What is Sony thinking? At least Canon has stepped up to the plate with a new heavy hitter in the 1/3 inch category with the XL2.

Re: A FEW new Panasonic cams of interest

Wow, what a slam. I normally have little use for camcorderinfo.com, but if Robin's willing to tell the truth (as she sees it) even if it ticks off Sony, then that's got to be viewed as a good thing for the site.

As for what is Sony thinking... it's like watching a train wreck in extreme slow motion... Sony seems determined to get it wrong at every possible point. If I were a practicing psychologist I'd say it's a case of "control freak gone wrong" -- they're trying to force certain things upon the market to control it, and the market is no longer listening. It's sad, really. The last great camera Sony made was the PD150, three or four years ago. Everything since then, from the consumer/prosumer series, has been a hackneyed attempt to garner 100% market share, following their mantra "Sony: The One And Only".

'Tain't working, guys. Drop the control-freak stuff and start giving the customer what the customer wants, rather than trying to force on the customer what you want. Panasonic gives us 24p, Panasonic's star is rising. Sony gives us Digital 8, and MicroMV, and touch-screens, and bluetooth, and -- who cares? Heck, Canon set the record for ignoring the customer, and even still they've pulled out what appears to be a potential winner with the XL2.

Sony's got another shot -- let's see if they come through with the HDV camera and add 24P to it, and real manual lens control. If they do, we'll listen. If not... hey, where can I buy stock in Panasonic? ;D

Re: A FEW new Panasonic cams of interest

When I think of how Panasonic is trying to put 3CCD cameras in the hands of mom and pop with the GS120 and GS200 - small enough to fit in a coat pocket - I think - things are changing fast, and we're going to benefit, and some of those in the race aren't even out of the starting gates. Think of the rabbit and turtle of Aesop fame. Panasonic had minimal offerings in the prosumer miniDV market for the longest time (although I love the rugged little 3 CCD EZ30 we have at work), even though they were great in SVHS, and their consumer miniDV couldn't match Sony. Now they are coming on strong while the others seem stuck in the mud.

Back to Aesop - let's hope Panasonic does not slow down anytime soon when they see how far ahead they are getting.

5.1 surround! HA! Why not have TWO onboard stereo mics that suck instead of only one! ::)
