A few grabs

Hey guys,

Just thought I would post a few grabs from a short-in-process. Nothing spectacular and I wasn't quite happy with the lighting on the day we shot (almost all natural lighting with a few reflectors to fill in shadows) but it's coming along at least.

The goal is to have most of the short be B&W with some toning of the highlights and shadows in the final scene.

The black and white shots look good. good tonal range. The top pic looks a little magenta in the highlights. you can fix that by finding a neutral grey in the rocks, and then doing your color corrections from there.

Here is an example of a neautral balance.

and here is an example of keeping the image warm (after first white balancing it).

Mmm, yes, excellent, thanks! I'm not sure how I missed that! I didn't bother white balancing in the field every take because nearly all the footage is going B&W.

I was hoping to get some stronger lighting for the third image. Maybe get some light down into the ravine for a more 3D effect. Maybe next time!

Great CC work Scharky, I am always amazed by what people can do with color correction.

Shaw, I really like the composition of all your shots. The B&W shots feel a little too grey to me, I wish they were more stark, with blacker blacks and whiter whites (I sound like a detergent commercial).

I hear ya CMessineo! I need to play with the contrast a bit. I don't want to completely crush the blacks and blow out the highlights but some more contrast would be good. Maybe some localized contrast instead of global? I think part of the problem is that I underexposed. Need to spread the data out more.
