F55: a day in London

Thanks for sharing.

The overall correction isn't the most flattering... but, great skin still shows through. Girl looking out over the water, solid.

Why is there so little from this camera blowing me away? Nearly all of these test shoots just look plain awful. I hate it when people say it looks videoish but this really does. It doesn't look organic at all. Please can someone... cough, Starcentral... post something that shows what this camera can do please!

Edit: Just watched on Youtube in original. That made things "better".

I guess it is either because of the lighting/material .. or maybe because the saturation does not die correctly at the top end.. http://www.dvinfo.net/article/post/making-the-sony-f55-look-filmic-with-resolve-9.html

It's very, very clean, and you're seeing all 14 stops at once, unlike film, where most of the image has much more contrast, and there's a lot of toe and shoulder roll off.

It's true film has a ton of latitude, but we were never looking at 14 stops with it in such a linear way as these new cameras can achieve.

Redcolor & Redgamma, the LUTs Blackmagic have put out for their cameras, all have more midtone contrast and are using up a lot of latitude in the highlight rolloff and shadows. You can do this with the F55 too, but you have to roll your own LUTs or use ACES.

I've got some stuff that I think you'd dig, but it's not really anything I can post, unfortunately.

[edit: Red and BMC also introduce a lot of color-crosstalk to reduce chroma variation in skin tones, something that film does a lot of. It's pretty, but not very accurate from a scientific point of view. Sony takes more of an accuracy approach. Again, you can get that look with the 55, but to make it look like the other cameras you have to know what's different about it for starters]

Well if you have issues with the look of this day in London, remember that there is no camera that can't look bad. Not knocking the guy that filmed this at all. But every camera be it Alexa, RED, Canon, BMC, Gh3, Iphone can look awful depending on so many variations from skill of the photographer to just plain boring light.

Its bound to happen that we will see an F55 film that blows us out of the water. I've seen plenty of Canon 5d Mark II films that blew me out of the water. Cameras only record what you are pointing them at. Some cameras with higher specs do a better job at it, but it first takes some nice light to get started...

I've seen my F3 material transformed by a good colorist beyond what I could've done. To me the biggest different when something look videoish is the way the camera is framed and moved.

This London specific footage was mostly to show the dynamic range of the camera and with a good grade it could definitely have a more organic look to it. The range and bit depth is there to muck around with it in post. I think many of us associate that organic look to a "better" image - probably from all the films/movies we're use to watching.

That's the other devil at play here... the grading/coloring has a lot to do with how "well" the final image will look so its one thing to go out and shoot something decent but then its a whole other art and science to know how to go about coloring and grading footage. RED has always had its own color science that can be applied to RED RAW footage as a base and then manipulated from there. Unfortunately the F55 has nothing more than a couple of LUTs which are "okay" but in reality don't lend themselves to producing a "film" look or anything organic (in my opinion). So it leaves many to have to figure it out through trial and error...

I've been shooting a lot with the F55 but some of it also doesn't get the "good" treatment in post so I don't bother to post that stuff. I will post a frame grab from a recent shoot with about a dozen different looks/grades I was playing around with myself: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...ous-cc-amp-grades&p=1986357344#post1986357344

I have no skin in the F55 game. However, your post is rude and it discourages our "friends" from posting. kind of defeats he purpose of sharing knowledge when you rip someones hard work up. Perhaps you could just quietly keeping searching for a video sample that resonates with you instead of insulting efforts.

I just posted some frame grabs from the F55 straight out of camera that were not meant to look like the next hollywood blockbuster filming and grading job,,. but instead show what kind of skin tones one might expect out of the F55 straight out of the box.

This is a big deal to many people because not everyone wants to shoot slog2 and have to go through post, yet shooting REC709 is like shooting yourself in the foot by shooting with a further reduced dynamic range.

Either way, I think these are some beautiful skin tones I was able to get right out of camera with my efforts going towards good lighting, good exposure, and use of the Hypergammas available.
