A couple stills and a a question about red lighting

I have two stills from the same shot of a short I'm working on. I'm pleased with the results (converting these to stills for some reason has lightened the image), but if someone could please tell me why the shot of the desk looks like it was shot on digital8 I'd much appreciate it. I used blue and red gels to color this scene.

Red, unfortunately, is a problem color for DV and tends to bloom depending on the exact red you are using. The color basically "leaks" and gives a blurring impression and can cause combing effects like you are seeing here.

If it's not too late, I would suggest you reshoot the scene flat with no gels and create the red effect in post. You will have a lot more control over it that way.

I'm gonna reshoot with orange and green, which will be more surreal anyway. Thanks for the tip. Red's too strong a color for most things anyway. (rationalization)
