a couple of questions from a new GH1 owner

@stonebat -
It surely will: at least I use the "manual" focus assist... you just press ARROW LEFT and MENU/SET, violá.
ONE button would be much desired, I've seen people post for that feature request.

The GH1 is one of the easiest cameras I've ever used to nail MF focus, the viewfinder lcd is really good and makes it pretty easy, add the fact that you can do MF manual assist quickly and pulling focus is pretty easy. If you're just taking casual pictures, MF is not too bad. If you want to take pro-level stills, this is just not the right camera...for soooo many reasons. It kicks the pants off of Canons for video however, and it's okay as a 2nd or backup stills camera -but the GH1 is just not a pro-level stills camera in any way at all - the body isn't right for it, and there aren't enough lens options by a country mile. This is where Nikon and Canon reign. I have both a 7D and GH13, I only think of the GH13 in terms of video and I only really think of the 7D in terms of stills. I'll do "goof-around" stills with the GH1, but I'd never use it as a primary camera for pro stills. If you're doing any kind of serious pro work (i.e. you're getting paid to take stills) the GH1 will be a real pain to use - you might get by for a little while but if that's something you want to be able to do, get a Nikon or a Canon and leave the GH1 for video duty. It's still a lot of fun to use MF lenses on the GH1, it's maybe the most "fun" camera I've ever had.

You said you would consider going canon because of the Af lens range. That's fine for stills but FYI none of the canon lenses or cameras auto focus during recording.

Nice thread.

I own a HMC150 and i'm a new user of the GH1 also. Please i'd aprecciate some advice:

1. Is it good enough for shoot a regional spot? Is it better than 5D? Is the 17mb limitation an issue?

2. There are any way to monitoring? By composite or HDMI perhaps...

3. How can i control the amount of light without a built in ND filter? Of course without change aperture and shutter.

I have a problem because my client demands to shoot with the 5D, but i dont have it avaible. I have the GH1 with the kit lens, the 20mm, and the 50mm, 85mm nikons. How can i convice that the GH1 can be as good as the 5D? Or can't I?

Thanks in advance, and sorry about my english. Its not my mother language.

All the people on this thread who are missing the AFS in video mode dearly should check out the Olympus 14-54/F2.8-3.5 Mark II lens. It doesn't hunt for focus like AFC-style Lumix lenses and will refocus when shutter button is half-pressed (get a remote control to do that gracefully). Also, I'm sure some will appreciate the 1-1.5 stop brightness upgrade as well.

Sorry, but does this lens need an adapter to use on a GH1?

ok so with any lens, m42, m43, adapter or none, you can push arrow left and menu/set to bring up the manual focus assist? This is nice.....

why on earth you need to turn the 20mm pancake 360 degrees what feels like about 5 or 6 times to get focus sometimes is beyond me, but i suppose i could switch to AF-S and do it with a half push then back to M to fine tune if needed?

so if i didnt need the extreme zoom end of the panasonic 14-140 kit lens so you think this would be a nice swap? I think they go for a similar price, if not then the olympus is slightly cheaper? Either way I would consider what I lose in the long zoom range to be well worth swapping to go from a 4-5.8 to a 2.8-3.5.

Am I mad?

1. Depends on who you ask / what you're shooting exactly. Hack it into a GH13 if possible.
2. Nope.
3. You can adjust ISO...
4 (?). People can argue back and forth about which SLR will have the best image. But it's what you're doing more than the image. Look at it this way: The fact that there are so many supporters of each camera only means that each camera is good. Or at least can be used good enough. It sounds like you're trying to convince yourself the GH1 is better than the 5D first.

1) The only way it is as good as the 5d is if you hack it above 17mb. Otherwise don't bother.

2) No way of monitoring during recording unfortunately. GH2 will have monitoring.

3) Use a screw on variable ND filter. The most popular one is the fader nd. This is literally ESSENTIAL to dslr shooting.

Well tell him about the hack. If you are persuasive enough you can convince him and some people think it is better. I sold my 5d for a gh1. So far I liked the 5d better but this is saving me money.
