GH3 A couple of questions about the GH3

I asked these on another thread, but this seems like a better place to ask

* Do we have any measure of DR on the GH3 in video mode?
* And, can you load custom picture styles on a GH3?

Holy Cow.

The Gh3 crushes the OMD and Canon 5 m3 in dynamic range?

That is unbelievable. Now I gotta get me one.

Thanks squig. JPEG stills are usually a perfect proxy for video in terms of color and DR.

Trouble is, I'm not sure how much I can trust their numbers. From my tests, it would seem that they tested the 5D3 with contrast=0, which is what gives me close to 9 stops of DR. But if you dial in contrast=-4 (for example, with Prolost Flat), it becomes a bit over 9 stops. And if you load a flat and wide picture style, such as CineStyle or Flaat, you can get around 11 stops.

So, this test tells me that the GH3 is better than a 5D3 just out of the box. That is good! But is it better than a properly tuned 5D3? And was the GH3 even properly tuned too?

Sidenote:
Anybody with a GH3 and some time to play with the settings, trying to find a good flat profile and measure DR with it?
Even if you can't load custom profiles into the camera (which I still haven't heard about), there's a lot to be gained by dialing in some nice settings. That's what I did with my NEX-5N ( http://www.similaar.com/foto/flaat-5n/index.html ) and I think it ended up working great (for example, this video is not graded at all: http://vimeo.com/57879637 )

Well besides dialing everything (almost) down what can be done? Some video said "Vivid" was the less noisiest picture style.
I got the GH3 yesterday and coming from MagicLantern on the 5D and the 550D and your Flaat and the Cinestyle setups, it feels like been thrown back in time again ;)
I also somehow can´t believe the GH3 can outperform a 5DIII in DR. Would be nice, of course, but...
Anyhow, this camera needs serious investigation and documentation.
And DVXuser should add a GH3 subforum fast.

If you want to run a test to measure the DR of your new toy, write to me at similaar.feedback@gmail.com :)

Is it the same test I'm supposed to be doing?

I'm trying to get my hands on a GH3, I have to import one because I want 60p.

I would imagine that jpeg test was just done on standard profiles, photographers don't generally shoot flat. Custom, standard, and natural dialled down on the GH3 look quite flat, especially custom.

Yes, that test; and having them done by the same person would make them more comparable too...

On a quick run through on small laptop screen the GH3 and 5DII looked very similar. You can really see how much more DR they both have then the GH1 even on small laptop but there wasn't any doubt there.

At least they said which settings they used, but, again, 5D2 with Neutral and Contrast=-2, and ISO 1250? GRRRRR...

But yes, the GH3 is looking good so far.

I downloaded this clip in order to look at the waveform and play with brightness to see where there's detail and where there's not. It is low-bitrate-720p, but it was kind of useful.

The GH3 seems to have more headroom in the highlights than the GH1, but they're relatively similar in the shadows (a bit of an advantage for the GH3 too, but relatively small). The 5D2 seems to have again a bit more headroom in the highlights than the GH3, and detail seems cleaner in the shadows (it doesn't see further, but it's less muddy, it will survive heavy push-up grading a bit better). And that is with Neutral and Contrast=-2.

So no, it's better than the GH1 but I wouldn't expect the GH3 to have better DR than the Canons. I could be wrong, though, it's not much of a scientific test.
