A cinematic Segway, no doubt.

I once read how Spielberg and his buddies were going to make an incredible new movie studio where lights set and adjusted themselves by using amazing robotic technology.

Funny thing was, those wacky Italians had been building remote-focus light fixtures for fifteen years prior to Spielberg's groundbreaking announcement.

I'll tell you one thing I know: IATSE doesn't like robots (they think they're creepy, and they never want to pay into H&W cause... well, they're robots!).

Dreamworks Studios never materialized despite enormous tax incentives and concessions made by the city to the Playa Vista project. Don't get me wrong, the guy is a prolific and incredible filmmaker, but I'd leave invention and technical innovation to guys who actually get it done.

While people like James Cameron, Graeme Ferguson, Tak Miyagishima, John Erland and John Dykstra all design, build and commercially deploy practical cinematographic and exhibition systems we use today, I don't think Spielberg has the fortitude to get a product to market.

One question: will there be creepy robots involved?

We can discuss again in seven years.

I always wondered why noone's using a Segway as a camera dolly. Wouldn't have to worry about track.

Actually... now that you mention it...

Jerry Holway using a Steadicam on a "Hands Free" - A converted segway that is steared with your feet and doens't require hands. (Note: small camio by me in the right of the picture..)

And of course, there's video! ...here: http://mikko.n3.net/files/JerryHandsfreeIBC05.wmv

killer... I hate it that I always have ideas but others have them before me. grrr

but would you sit? wouldnt that be extremely uncomfortable, even if you stood? i cant think of how they would do it and make it a comfortable experience....maybe i'm not thinking it all of the way through though

It's actually really crazy feeling!
I gave it a go, though without a rig, and you just stand there and lean where you want to go.
You can stand on it as long as you can stand still - Which actually, with a heavy rig, your legs can have circulation problems after too long of a time, but you've jsut gota get off and walk around a bit between takes ;)
