A Cheaper 24p?

After settling on the HD100, I was trying to explain to a friend why HD24p is so important to me, and he expressed an interest in getting involved with the same format, but he doesn't have near the budget I do.

We considered the possibility of getting an HD camera in the $1000 to $1500 range and then using Magic Bullet to turn the footage into 24p. I couldn't think of any reasons why that wouldn't work for him, but did I forget anything? Would there be loss of resolution or other adverse effects? Will Magic Bullet even work with HD video?

if your going from 60i to 24p through magic bullet your deinterlacing your image. Magic bullet does do a good job of deinterlacing and retaining resolution, but you still arent getting full 1080p.

Well, if the HD100 only shoots 720p, and Magic Bullet's results on 1080i footage are comparable to that I think he'd be plenty happy with it. I guess there'd be a loss of other options geared towards filmmakers that the HD100 has, but I'm not sure he'd really need them. What do you fellas think?

well, 1080i has alot of visual info, you can probably 24p it in MB and it should look ok. but only if youre going down to SD. if you deinterlaced 1080i to 720 24P, i dont think it would look so good.

but!

you can shoot 1080i and pull the "slowing it to 40% to slomo 24P" trick, then down convert to 16:9 DV. and get really sharp 24P slow motion for SD purposes.

I think the SONY handy cam 1080i camera would be great for making 16:9 slmotion.

He sounds interested in the JVC GR-HD1US, but he also likes the Sony HDR-FX1. What do you think would give him more bang for his buck?

The FX1 is a good forty times better than the HD1 is. I'm on record as not being able to stand interlaced, and the HD1 is progressive, so for me to say this is no small thing. The FX1 is a good camera and an amazing value at its price point. The HD1 is *not* a good camera. If those are his choices, go for the FX1.

Get a PAL HC1 and deinterlace with a decent algorithm and you get 25p. Or a PAL FX1 in cineframe 25 should look great.
