A Blinding short film shot on the DVX

Hi guys,

Here's a short film I did using a DVX-100. Was really happy with the camera as its versatility allowed me to get good shots using both studio and outdoor lighting.

Editing was done in Final Cut Pro, then moved over to my friend's PC for grading on Premiere using Magic Bullet.

Check it out and let me know what you think, would love to hear your opinions! Cheers.

Truthfully from the title i expected something that was gonna be painful to watch lol.
Anyway, great dop-ing, i dug the shots and stuff. Truth be told this isnt really my type of film, and thus I felt it was a tad draggy - just my 2 cents. However, props to your editing, it was really neat. What look presets did you use for the shots? I think i smell bleach bypass when he begins to go blind, but I can't put my finger on some of the outside shots. Btw did you use reflectors or anything?

Thanks Malcolm. For the blinding sequences I used natural light with a reflector for a bit of fill. Color correction was merely the correction wheel in Premiere, plus tweaked the levels a bit.

I used the Cinelook presets in the DVX, although for my next film I will probably shoot everything as normal as possible, then do more grading and altering in post, since I've learned a bit more since then.

very well done. I would be beyond proud of this. Can't wait to see some more of your stuff in the future!

This is very powerful stuff. It makes u thankful.

I'd love to see a less heavily compressed version

You have an amazing story writing ability, as well as a good eye.

Great

i really love it. i had that feeling you get after you see a good movie for the first time

Amazing job! I love the style of the film, very interesting to me. The shots were beautiful, music was VERY appropriate, voice overs were pro sounding and just an awesome film. Keep up the good work.

I see you took advantage of your character's situation to show all of the beautiful places in Sydney. I loved the footage - the aquarium, the sailing boats... they were all really beautiful. Both of the actors delivered pitch-perfect performances. I honestly could not find any flaws. And believe me, I scrutize everything. Only thing that kind of turned me off was the montages - I think you might have gone a bit overboard. Especially with all the dissolves and such (the little girl disappearing). Maybe you could tone it down a bit. Everything else I am happy with! This should win you a few prizes... not that prizes are the most important thing!

I know exactly what you mean dcho...the ending was something I thought about for some time- how do I visually portray this man's vision slowly leaving him behind? I wanted to use the fast cuts and vanishing / pulling away images to symbolize his panic and him wanting to desperately cling on to the memories he's seen over the course of the day.

I really appreciate everyone's comments, thank you so much! There are several really good films on this board and I will try my best to watch and give my comments as well.
