a "bit" confusing...

"Bit depth" that is.

So After Effects can render in 12-bit and 16-bit, making it a popular product for maintaining picture quality while adding effects to video footage (most applications render in 8-bit). What bit depth is Avid Xpress Pro rendering its effects and transitions in? I know Sapphire effects are 16-bit capable. Does that mean Avid is just as good as After Effects for effects when using Sapphire at least?

EDIT: In continuing my quest to understand these issues, I discovered that Xpress Pro renders at 8 bit. That's not necessarily a good thing. It reduces the quality of DV footage. With a Mojo it's 10 bit. I'm curious if other NLEs like Premiere Pro 2.0 do better than this. (Obviously the much higher end Avid Nitris suites render at higher bit-depth...but I'm looking at home systems.)
