There is no one phrase answer to this. What are you trying to do? If the current requirements are low, like a few ma, then yes. You could get away with 50c worth of parts.

Google around a bit for "dc/dc converters". They're are small components out there take an input range of around 9v, and turn it into a stable 5v. They're about 2"x2"x0.5" . But do check the required power ratings!
Power rating should be pretty low. Here's exactly what I'm looking to do.
I have this 9v, 5400mAh battery which is currently used to power my lens adapter. I have seen numerous USB 2.0 HD enclosures, which run on 5v power (many of them draw power from the USB connection itself, which is why I know it can't be much). So it would be great to be able to run those drives off this power supply.
Have you considered building one into a combined dumy battery/battery mount. - basically a small plate that goes between the battery and the camera and then has a 5v output on the side? like a powertap found on ENG cams for the on-camera-lights. It would still of course pass the battery power in paralel normally to the camera.
I am a new HVX-200 owner with a 16GB P2 card - all is well and I like this system very much.
I do have a similar requirement too many that I would like to be able to:
DUMP THE P2 contents to an external self powered yet PORTABLE FIREWIRE 6pin DISK DRIVE from the HVX-200 as a 1394 host.
I have several small portable laCIe Porche 250GB and 160GB disks that I may dedicate to the FAT32 system for the P2-OFFLOAD.
However I have not been completely sucessful in getting this to happen due to the 5V battery power supply I have. Some large disk power up and some dont. THe supply will supply nearly 1amp for a few hours at 5V.
FAiling symptom is simply that the disk although pwered and spinnig is not recognised by the FORMAT menu in the HVX-200. Thus I cannot COPY2HDD.
SO, I'm wondering if the device shown in this thread would sucessfully power these leCIE 250GB or 160GB PORCHE portable disks...
if so I would be interested n buying the poratble power supply if it was still available..
thanks for any ideas.
I am not going down the FS100 or CITIDISK path, but woud rather buy a new 32GB P2 card when they are out else cart along one of old MAC powerbooks I have that will do the job I suppose usimg the HVX-200 camera as a 1394_device.
I'm just looking for a simple and inexpensive wayto OFFLOAD the P2 card(s).
