9mm Blanks.....Silent?

Anyone using these? I need the flash w/o the bang for two back to back rounds.
I've heard of these but can't pinpoint a web search on sales/info.

Muzzle flashes can be easily added in post, using a program like AlamDV, and will be a lot safer than using any sort of blanks. I haven't heard of silent blanks, but if you need silence and a muzzle flash, you might want to look into AlamDV.

Listen to Barry, the cheapest and saftest way is to do it in post. Once Upon a Time in Mexico had some of the realistic looking post flashes.

Well, my brother and I found these really cool toy guns at KB Toy store, they fire like the Guncon guns for the Time Crisis videogames in the arcade except they look like real berettas. What we did was took them apart and ripped the sound chips out and carefully tore off the orange bud on the front of the barrel. They look like they'll be a great tool for our movies when mixed with post flashes and because they make a Guncon-like click when you fire them, it'll be easier to match sound and flash.

Amazing how far toy guns have come from when I was little...

Just have to spray paint them black and we're good to go!

Thanks for the input guys. I will have to take a closer look into a digital solution as my search for a "quiet" blank came up negative.

The hunt continues

My Director "friend" wants to shoot in 30p for slo-mo and capture gun recoil (shells dispensing). He insists he knows of flash blanks with only a firecracker (pop) sound, no were near the norm blank.

Anyone with further info please drop a line.

On my last project we used "blanks only" replicas. We shot with a Colt 1911 and a Desert Eagle replica that use special 8mm blanks, they are not silent and the muzzle flash sucked. The replica guns had a hard time cycling the blanks. We never did get two shots in a row. This would be a major problem with your hypothetical "silent blanks". If they do not have enough power to make noise, they would not have enough power to cycle an auto loader for the next shot, with out some serious and expensive gunsmithing. I have had nothing but problems with blanks, especially in autoloading weapons. It seems to take way too much time to get it right and is a safety problem. When gun fire is required, my suggestion will be to either hire an armourer and use expensive "movie guns" or go digital and create the effect in post. The post solution would be the more cost effective.

I still need a visible gun recoil, this film is "gritty realism" and can't suffer a re-shoot do to a digital spoiler in post.

The toy guns I showed have a recoil effect, like I said they fire like the Guncon guns in the arcade. Perhaps you could explain the shot to us so we can better advise you on what kind of prop gun you'll need?

That's cool, but you wil not get that with "silent blanks(?)", and if you are using auto loaders, you will need to have the gun modified so that any blanks will work in them. Revolvers will work fine with blanks, but are kinda dated for todays action films.

You said that you need the flash without the bang for two back to back rounds. IMO, these are unrealistic parameters unless you have some serious bucks (relatively). You can use very light load blanks in a revolver, but they will not be silent. You could contact a prop house and get a gun that fires some type of flameable gas mixuture out of a gun to simulate the flash, but that will not give you recoil either (you'll have a visual que I quess). If you want flash and recoil you are gonna get a bang.

Good luck.

decided to shoot this scene on the 4th of July

decided to shoot this scene on the 4th of July

We have clearence to shoot at a house on a quiet street however this shot takes place IN the street (no permit / pyro) and we all believe gun fire would result in cops (we hate cops).
As for the toy guns w/ recoil that would be great for the next one but we already have shots w/ a baby glock 9mm, "in the can" and can't afford to re-shoot w/ a different gun.

hopefully the 4th will work out, we're testing blanks this weekend

Thanks to all,
Jim

The posts talking about the toy guns were posted under the assumption that you did not have a gun "in the can". Nothing is stopping you from using the baby Glock and adding the digital effects to shots of it. Good luck with your test this weekend. I fear that a baby Glock won't cycle with blanks. Blanks are usually low powered, compared to real shells and have a tendancy to "stove pipe' in the ejectors. Let us know if it works out, I want to get some of those blanks. While your testing, I would get some shots (it would be cool if you could shot your actor shooting the test shots (you never know!) if not, get CU of the gun with a non-discript BG (low angle with sky BG), like I said, you never know. Coverage is good, coverage is good!!!

If you are going to be using a public street with real guns, be very, very careful. Make sure that the gun is squeaky clean, i.e., is registered and that the owner is available. Dudes running around with guns are a cop magnet. Let the neighbors know that you are making a movie so the will not drop a dime on you. Make sure that the gun stuff is the last thing you shoot and get it over with quick (be prepared and organized), then split. I would get some shots of the gun shots without blanks so that you will have the option to do a digital effect in post if you chose to. Then move to the use of blanks.

I hope you do not think that I am giving you sh*t. I am in your corner. I have done a lot of low budget stuff with guns and it is more complicated than it seems. I know how you feel about cops, I was once detained for 2 hours on a shoot when the Redford MI Police Department wanted to know about our guns (I also matched the description of a bad guy they were looking for and had quite few unpaid parking tickets from Detroit, oh well...). The only time I've been involved with a project with guns and it went smooth was when we hired a professional armourer with a large inventory of specially modified guns.

Best of luck, keep us posted. We are all here to learn something.

Has "absolutely no one" read my posts. I have been a stunt coordinator and stuntman for over 20 years..... I posted that the reason for using full load blanks is to get the guns to cycle, (previous post) There really are two choices for shooting weapons on the set. Use full load blanks, get your cycle shot and ejections (while hiring a weapons tech) or using non guns with no ejections but infinitely more safe and flash. PERMITS, PERMITS, PERMITS, it will cya when someone gets hurt trying to doing it with shortcuts. GEEZ!!!!!!!!!! Cheaper is not always the answer. Hollywood has been doing this for quite some time, THERE'S A REASON WHY THEY DO THINGS THE WAY THAT THEY DO! They work......
Think about all the hours spent trying to figure out how to do guns and gunshots without the real deal....isn't that worth something?

Wow, Dude, you need a hug!! Most of the posts on this thread have said what you have said, with out the emotion. You are right, we are behind you. Either do it as a digital effect or hire a pro.

Have a good holiday.

Maverickprods, I feel the stress of SAFTEY in your post and it is appreciated as professionaly I came up as a Gaffer (35mm 16mm DV) in florida shooting w/ generators and a mostly green crew (yikes), on one "Gangsta" flick (Handle your Buisness) we had a gunpro/stunt guy who also worked on S.W.A.T (heavy gun play). I badgered the hell out of him w/? and feel well educated (I won't get specific, cuz I don't want to argue.)

Rosestar, if your ever in Orlando lets get a drink, I know this great place were the strippers dig cinema.

Ok jonestown your on!!!

Let us know how your test go this weekend and how the project works out. I came up as an AC and a Gaffer also (16mm and 35mm), but have have been doing a lot of guerilla stuff lately (long story... ).
BTW, what is your job title on this project we have been hashing out and what format/camera are you shooting with?

Good luck! I'll keep in touch.

I was just searching for the perfect option a few weeks ago on gun props. Here's what I have found. (after long hours of weeks of research).......

You should look into what they call airsoft. The gun is virtually a replica, includes magazine, blowback slide. Make sure you look at Gbbs. The only thing is, they do not have the muzzle flash, nor do they eject shells. The magazines are filled with green gas, and you can load bbs into them.

The other option is much more expensive. It's call pfc or model guns. Those eject shells, have muzzle flash, and have a firecracker sound. You'll probably like them alot, but unless you have $$$ the airsoft is a better choice. These are not blank guns, these ARE CAPS.

Good luck.

In my film I just used real revolvers, pulled the bullets out of the shells, and let the primers make the flash. You need a kinetic bullet puller (or some plyers, which I don't reccomend) to pull the bullets out of the shells.

You can see it at http://www.dvxuser.com/V3/showthread.php?t=27708&page=2&pp=10 in the beginning of my movie which I posted.

I also did this with a real beretta. I just pulled the bullet out of the 9mm shells and put the shell in the chamber. The downside to this is the gun will not cycle through to another bullet, so the slide won't pull back. Luckily I didn't have to worry about this because the gun fire with the beretta were only 1 shots and quick cuts, so the slide not pulling back isn't noticable, but there is pretty good muzzle flare. It's best, if you are doing multiple shots, just to get your hands on a real revolver and putting the shells in with the bullets pulled out. When the hammer hits the primer you get a decent muzzle flare. You have to be careful, though. I had a firearms and safety expert on set every time the guns were fired. It's best to have someone like this so the actors don't get worried that one of the shells will have a real bullet in them. Make sure there isn't anything lodged in the barrel as well. That's how Brandon Lee died.

It's safe if you take the neccessary precautions. Any local law enforcement officer will be able to be your firearms and safety expert. That's who did it for me. They will most likely do it for free because cops get really excited when you say you're shooting a movie and you want a real cop to be in it or to help. At least they were excited for me!
