9 minutes to transfer 3.53 G Laptop to G5 ?

I transfered a P2 content ( 3.53G ) from my Acer Laptop to my G5 Quad linked by a rooter ( USB2 ).
It took more than 8 minutes....

What am i doing wrong ?

thanks

The Real-Stream guys that tested usb connections for their Andromeda DVX product, mentioned the G5 have very slow USB compared to laptops and older machines. They need 28mb/sec or about 224mbit which is actually less than half the rated usb2 speed. My G5 is very slow in USB with external hard disks. The acer uses standard controller that is fast enough. I believe you could get a PCI USB card to bypass the onboard usb controller on the Mac. It should be 3 times faster. Or perhaps you could try a different usb port on the Mac? But all use the same controller so that shouldn't make a difference.

If you are getting only 50mbits/sec perhaps the rooter is at fault? Can't you use straight Ethernet? Even 100mbits is better if the laptop doesn't have GigE.

I just did a test with a 3.5inch enclosure on the mac. 16mb/sec or 128mbit/sec. So, close to realtime is possible. The mac is not the problem.

hmmm...

close to realtime is very slow, because first, i had to download the P2 content to the laptop.

I hope it can be much much faster...

The 2.5 inch disks are the limit. If you are interested in something much faster perhaps a PCMCIA to external SATA adapter and an external 3.5inch enclosure would do the trick. If you also put one of the cheap external SATA cards on the mac, that could be 1/4 to 1/5 realtime. Or You could edit from the SATA drive. You can get 60-70mb/sec if you use a top of the Line SATA disk like the Raptor 150gb. Realtime is 12.5mb and 2.5inch disks are 15-20mb/sec.

really ?

that would explain the slow tranfer rate ?

Would it be a lot faster to use an external battery powered firewire drive ?

I mean, a lot faster is a must for me. A Lot faster.

thanks limo991 !

I don't think anyone using a laptop or p2 store gets more than 20-22 mb/sec with the fastest disks. External SATA is as good as internal. Firewire 800 and 400 can be fast, but on 2.5disks you will not go very far. 3.5inch disk and you start getting realilistic transfer rates. But not on USB2.
