8mm To DVX

Hi, All--

I'll be using my DVX (100) to shoot several projected 8mm home movies as part of a larger project. I'm aware of 8mm's 18-fps (more or less) rate. Just wondering whether anyone's done this & if you have, what combination of DVX frame rate and shutter speed, etc. worked best for you. Thanks Much!

Hi, I did this, but with a Canon XM1/GL1, so I was shooting 50i PAL.

I got hold of a projector with a variable projection speed and then tweaked it until it stopped flickering. I projected onto a good white screen about 3 feet square to keep the brightness and contrast up. I then added a flicker filter in FCP and darkened the blacks to make them properly black.

Longer shutter speeds will decrease the flicker. Also people don't seem to mind if the frame rate is incorrect when watching 8 mm. I think people actually expect to see people running too fast.

Make sure that the camera lens is as close to the projector lens as possible to minimise distortion. Also make sure you zoom in to fully fill the video frame. I was tricked by my overscanning viewfinder and had horrible black borders on some stuff.

Flicker was my main problem though, as the projector would never keep constant speed!

Hope that helps...

Yes, my buddie did this using a Sony VX2100 and a true projection screen (one with reflective particles). We did not have to make any changes in post.
