8mm and 16mm film conversion to MiniDV

Hi,

Does anyone have any recommendations about converting 8 and 16 mm film to MiniDV using a DVX100a? I've tried shooting the screen with another camera and I'm getting pretty bad flicker.

thanks.

Unless you have a crystal-sync or AC synchronous motor projector, it's going to flicker.  With the DVX you have the unique opportunity to actually capture the 24 frames as they're projected, so you might be able to do a better, less flickery job... but you'll need either a crystal-sync projector at 23.976fps, or a variable-speed projector that you fine-tune as you monitor the output on a CRT display.

I have transferred my Super 8 footage with great success using the DVX. Set your shutter speed to 24 and set the camera at either f6 or f5 and shoot directly from the screen and you will get a flicker free transfer.

Assuming the original film was shot at 24fps...
It is best to use a bright white ink jet paper and move the projector as close to that as possible. Put the DVX right next to the projector and set your focus and then let it go.

You will more than likely need to make various adjustments to the exposure depending on the variety of shots on the film originals. Experiment, but it worked out very well for me. It's the first camera that I used to do this that did not give me any flicker at all.

One more thing of note: The average person shot Super 8 at 18fps. What I do for this situation is play back the footage on the projector at 24fps, shoot it with the DVX and then slow it down to its original rate in your NLE.
