FS7: 8 $#&*!@ channels of audio

What do you guys do about those unnecessary 8 channels of audio in the FS7. Is there any way to stop them from importing or getting rid of them quickly. Clients find them annoying.

Is it the same with F5 & 55?

In FCPX you just set strip out silent audio channels in import prefs. And if you recorded only on one, it only imports one, if you used 4 it imports all 4. They can then of course be individually manipulated.

So obviously in post.

It's just another weird and unnecessary step. I want my camera to record the number of tracks of audio I have set.

In PP mark all clips and right click. Choose Intepret footage and under audio adjust the clips to your liking when it comes to how the audio channels are treated.

And then tell every person you ever have to give footage to that they need to mess around with that stuff as well. It's just silly.

Maybe they are trying to secure the future of every DIT person out there.

Take a look at Catalyst Browse and see if it has a simple way to do this, still in post but it might be easier and free for clients to dink around.

I would think anyone who uses an NLE would know it well enough to be able to set audio tracks, it takes 5 seconds or just a pref setting. If you had a menu in the camera that told the camera to ignore some channels, I bet a lot of shooters would screw up and cut used channels by mistake.

At least FCPX handles audio very elegantly. Premier was always a bit of a mess with audio, back when I used it anyway in the beginning of the century and last century it was hopeless audio always drifting out of sync. I am sure it is much better now with PP.

Just do what I do, and slowly start moving away from post and leaving more and more of these little quirks to the editorial department... works a charm! :p

I work with it fine. The whole point is that it's another pointless additional process that we should be able to set in camera

To be honest Catalyst Browse annoys me even more than the 900 tracks of audio :)
Boy...a big AMEN to Catalyst Browse. I can never get it to function on my Macbook and when it does, it lags like a mother. To just do a simple screening I have to rely on Good Ole' Mr. Wilson, Content Browser, unless I'm in ProRes, then Quicktime is your friend. But not QT !0, QT 7 because QT 10 removed the TC readout function.

I have to say that's not an awful idea. For visiting clients, that's what I do. Let them set the tone in edit. A discussion with their editor before hand keeps me honest and gives nothing unexpected.
For my own projects where I heaving giants chunks of data to my editor, I want her to have as trouble free input as possible. She's already is getting dumped on with media from multiple devices with multiple codecs.

Whoever your editors are, they need to stop complaining about this. There are so many different cameras out there and different formats, they just need to know that that FS7 does 8 channels. At least in Premiere, this issue can be solved with literally just a few clicks when setting up the project/importing. There may be a way to disable this in the future, but its really not that big a deal.

Thanks that's actually the most valuable information I've gotten out this discussion. I'm still on FCP 7 so I don't know how other NLE's handle the import and I haven't really worked on a solution yet.
I don't know if there is a way to do it in FCP on import - so far I deal with it on the timeline, and that can be time consuming if you have to do it every time you bring in a new clip.

Its easy enough for clients in Premiere to just tell thm how to import it .How about AVID or FCPX ? Is the a trick for FCP 7?

If you have 20 things which are not a big deal it starts to get annoying. And the only way they will ever be addressed is by making a noise about them.
