7Q RAW is better than The Beatles. Beauty Test Shots

So it was Chinese New Years in downtown LA and they always have a big celebration so I tested out the 7Q. I am just really, really impressed with the image quality. It is just so top notch I can't get over it - solid image, great DR and fantastic colors - and it's so gradeable. Did a very basic grade in After Effects after transcoding from Resolve. I just wanted to see what the color looked like without really stylizing it. Shot with Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and Canon 24-105 f4 on Speedbooster

Great job Convergent Design. I can't wait for all the rest of stuff!!!! First real client shoot tomorrow with 2K RAW. A bit nervous since it's for Disney, but since I've tested the hell out of the 7Q and learned it's do's and dont's, I feel confident it will work well.

Very nicely done. I can see where with this subject matter one might be inclined to bash the color, contrast and saturation around, but your more reserved handling of it both shows the available range as well as lends a dignity to the celebration. Looks great.

So glad it's working well for you after the birthing pains.

Wow, amazing video (finally a great test video!!) So the 7Q does 24 FPS 2K RAW? Did you shoot this in SLOG2?

For this one mostly shot 120fps RAW because there was just all those cool streamers and confetti flying around. Would not have looked nearly as cool in 24fps. But I have shot quite a bit of 24fps with the 7Q and it looks great. And yes, S-Log 2, my preferred profile. But at this point, it's the only one you can use with the 7Q, but I would use S-Log over all others anyways.

great as always Gene and again a step ahead. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing!

Could you pls post a link? Can't see it on iPad or Android device as I'm away from the office for a few days. Would love to see this.

Great Shots Gene! love the grade and choice of camera angles.

Thanks! Actually the grade was mostly the camera. All I did was bump up contrast and saturation, with a little extra saturation on the certain colors. I really wanted to just test the colors and see what they are without stylizing too much.

Great shots! I used the O7q also for some projects now and its (if its paid) worth the efford to use the 2K raw. May you can post some raw DNG samples to have a closer look at some scenes because i get many compression artifacts in contrast image areas - may its because a low speed sdi cable?

I'd love to see what this looks like with the colours and the mids really pumped up. I mean it looks great but it's not too far from the internal look - I want to know more about it the colour-depth and shadow noise.

Big request I know.

Cheers

Gene, with the white balance issue, are you setting the white balance to look correct on the 7Q or are you leaving it so it's correct on the camera? I know this will be addressed in the next firmware update, but I was just wondering.

I asked CD support and the answered:

this issue has already been corrected for our next release due the beginning of march.
I would still recommend to correctly white balance, and trust the image on the FS700 for
the time being, since this is just a live display artifact. The recorded images will have the
correct white balance matching the FS700's display.

Did I read MARCH???

Hey Josh, all I did was set it to 5600k in the FS700. It seems to be pretty good. It does look different on the camera LCD and the 7Q though. I didn't change the colors much at, just did a basic grade. The skin tones look pretty good IMO. Looking forward to the firmware upgrade though.
