7Q: Latest Firmware Bug. LED buttons don't work.

Note: I also wrote to Andy at CD tech support about this as well.

I have a strange bug since updating to the new firmware, which happened repeatedly on my last shoot. Fortunately, I was only using the 7Q as a monitor because the client wanted AVCHD for small, quick files.

Here’s what kept happening. After turning on and off the 7Q (to save battery power), the buttons on the 7Q LED screen would no longer work. The physical buttons like the Off switch on the side work, but anything on the 7Q LED would do nothing when pushed. I would have to un-plug the battery several times and eventually, the 7Q would work again.

So I tested it out tonight, putting the 7Q through the motions and I realized

1) It’s ONLY with the LATEST FIRMWARE. I re-loaded the PREVIOUS FIRMWARE and the buttons always WORKED FINE, even after repeated on and off over 20 minutes or so. Plus, I used the previous firmware on quite a few shoots and the LED buttons always worked.

2) I then re-loaded the latest firmware and the button issue started again very quickly. It seems like it happens every 4th or 5th time I turn on the 7Q

3) It doesn’t matter if it’s on Batteries or AC power in (although it does seem to happen more with batteries, but it could be co-incidence); after 4 or 5 times turning on and off, the LED buttons just won’t work and I have to un-plug the unit once or several times to get the buttons to work again.

4) I’ve tried it with 4K2HD as well as just setting to the default 4:2:2 / 4:4:4 -> (.DXP) settings, and it the LED buttons fail sporadically on both settings.

5) Doesn’t matter if the 7Q is plugged into the FS700 or not. The bug happens either way.

Has anyone else run into this? Am I missing something?

Thanks for any help. Like I said, it’s seems to be only with the latest firmware. When I re-load the previous firmware, the buttons always seem to work.

Yes I've seen this too but only once so far. I had to turn the unit off by unplugging it and it's been fine since although probably only turned it on 3-4 times maybe.

Thanks Paul.

Same thing as me? The LED buttons did not work?

Did you ever run into this with the previous firmware or just the new one?

Yes that's right, the on-screen buttons did not respond at all. Only seen this on the new firmware, never before.

Cant remember what the sequence was to get it to fail and whether I was in raw or 4k2HD mode, probably the latter. I think it occurred from power up. I just put it down to one of those odd things I've come to expect on the unit (although that's not very good is it!) and power cycled.

Happened to me once as well (I've reported this to CD and mentioned here in the forum on some other thread). Been shooting 7-8 days with the new firmware with not many problems so it's very rare occurrence.

I haven't had this happen to me, but, I have noticed that it takes a different kind of "touch" to get the on-screen buttons to work. I have to push for a little longer, and harder than before. I don't like it. Wish they had left the screen touch alone.

I've had this happen once to me on the new firmware (only). It happened once and a reboot cured it. I'll second that cuervo, it does seem to generally require a little more umph to push the on-screen buttons.

Perhaps they're trying to refine the submenus selection. With prior firmwares when I was trying to turn a feature on such as LUT it would often go all the way to a submenu accidentally. Now it seems it takes a bit longer touch to get into the submenus. I like that since it's not often you need submenus.

In the "What's New" for the latest firmware, they describe a process to "recalibrate" the on-screen buttons. All you have to do is restart the O7Q. But, I've been thru this with no change. As others have noted, it takes about 5 restarts for this behavior to manifest.

For me, this is the MOST SERIUS BUG with the 7Q yet. Like I mentioned on a 13 hour shoot the other day, I had to power cycle the 7Q probably about 15 times or so to get the buttons to work again. I was working in PAL 25p settings because it was for a Chinese client, and what was really strange was that the ZEBRA button did NOT work the entire day until I switched back to 60i NTSC settings.

Hi Mitch, please look into this as this is seriously impacting my workflow. At least on that shoot, I only used the 7Q as a monitor. I can't imagine how annoying this would be if I had to use the 7Q as a recorder. Please just make the buttons the way they were before in a patch, PRONTO.

Thanks Cuervo on the "Recalibrating." I'm going to look into that.

Gene...

It's in the Release Notes for the latest O7Q Manual. Note the last two "Fixes":

FIXES & IMPROVEMENTS
• FIXED Time of Day timecode issue
• FIXED Backward file compatibility during firmware updates
• FIXED “Ticking” audio after 720p file recovery
• FIXED Black dots in live image when overexposing or white-clipping
• FIXED False-triggering when Odyssey set to camera trigger
• FIXED Timecode triggering in 720p
• FIXED False “Warranty Void” notice on some units from previous firmware
• FIXED 1080psf audio sync issue in Playback
• FIXED Pixel Zoom mode distorting of image on OLED
• IMPROVED Touchscreen response
• IMPROVED Touchscreen recalibrates by engaging F1 Lock button

Also, another weird issue with my long, PAL shoot the other day.

On some power recycles, the LED buttons would work again, but after 10 or 15 minutes, the LED buttons would just stop working. I don't have a long shoot day for another 3 weeks and I'm hoping this gets fixed in a patch by then. Very problematic workflow issue.

Thanks Cuervo, I'm going see if F1 does anything the next time it freezes.

I didn't think much of it at the time, but I'm pretty sure the buttons froze once for me and I just instinctively hit the F1 screen lock button a couple times and I think it started working again.

Andy @ Convergent told me to do the same thing (F1 button). Seems an odd workaround as this is the first firmware this has happened on and not ideal, but I guess that's the nature of recorders.

I hope they fix this in the next firmware update.

I was shooting today in a studio type setting with the O7Q constantly on for around 5 hours. No issues and didn't see the problem. I only power cycled around 3 times though.

Yeah, I was shooting out in the field for like 13 hours, very long day without any chance of re-charge so I had to make the batteries last, so lots of on and off which definitely caused problems.

But now I know to hit the F1 button.

Sorry I was away from the forum yesterday and am just now seeing this thread.

We had some calibrating issues on some OLED panels and instituted a new calibration subroutine in the new firmware. Some panels were too sensitive and would freak out in overly static electricity environments, such as when used in a carpeted room on a dry day. We will keep working to zero in on the best calibration, and please, everyone keep reporting any issues to cdsupport@convergent-design so that we can properly log the isue.

In the meantime, the F1 button has been specifically designated to act as a recalibration tool. If you ever find the OLED pannel touchscreen misbehaving, please push F1 and then push again to see if it adjusts. The process is effectively instant so you can do a double-push, just make sure the Screen Lock indicator comes up in the center of the top menu.
