7Q Issues

Mitch, I find your answers quite unhelpful. So you're not looking into it? Thanks

Lucky that we have people like McReedy on the forum to offer help.

Cheers

They've got nothing to look into. This is an issue from the camera. And just curious, what are the bugs holding the 7Q back from being a production beast? Because in my experience, it's performed quite amazingly. There are still some features I look forward to but as it stands, I don't see any bugs or issues that result in a negative impact on image quality.

+1. I feel like it's working pretty dang well. But more features please! :)

Bursts like that are usually a result of diffraction, which is caused from stopping down the lens. The more stopped down, the more defined the star burst is.

A bit it off topic, but I had this for the first time the other day (I generally hate flare, so usually avoid it, but couldn't in this instance). Short of opening up all the way, anyone have any luck eliminating this? Or does anyone have any experience with CP2s seriously stopped down (as in f11: it's a model shoot) - and if the extra blades deal with the stars?

I feel it is an 'issue' of the camera and the recorder which sorts out (debayers?) the raw data presented to it - many raw cams have had 'issues' black highlights, bloom and the like that have be cured in the debayer process.

But to be fair on CD I think the job they are doing in creation of the DNGs is excellent for a machine of its size speed and price, especially when the 700 is not chucking out the full stream but a compressed raw of some nature to get down the single SDi pipe.

Hey Colin, did you get the black artifacts that Prendi is talking about or did you get a flare that you did not like? I shoot into the sun all the time and I haven't noticed his yet, but maybe because I tend to shoot more open and rarely above f5.6.

No, the black artefacts I've never seen, but I generally don't give two hoots about such stuff. I rarely pixel peep and if the audience is noticing that sort of stuff, you've got bigger problems!

Rather the issue was with the stars. To be honest, I've probably had it happen before but just ignored/never noticed it since it was never a problem. However I've a job coming up involving a lot of intricate comping and the star will cause problems. It started to become apparent as soon as I moved off wide open - even half a stop.

Since it is a diffraction issue you might not actually get it with the sun as the Sun is probably not quote the right size to cause it (diffraction being cause by light entering a pupil that is close in size to the wavelength of the light itself - as I recall, although I'm sure Cuervo will be happy to correct my horrendously poor recall of physics!) although it did in this case!

I was wondering if anyone else had had similar issues and came up with ways to get rid of it. Thankfully it has been noticed on the test day, not the shoot, so we have time to deal with it. We added a tonne of haze and that killed it (as it spread the light out), so some promists might kill it too (I have a set of BPM so, I can check that easily) otherwise I was wondering if CP2s (which have 14 blades, rather than the 6 of the canon FDs I have) so that may sort it too - I don't know. I was hoping other people might be able to point me in the right direction before I hire one in...

OK, well in my opinion, CD should look into it. This is not pixel peeping. Some shots look awful. Obviously the Vimeo compression hides it a lot, but the ProRes HQ doesn't and that is the format that I have to deliver in. This is for broadcast, not web. Sony is going to say it's a CD problem and CD are going to say it's a Sony problem. All I know id that I invested in a system that is currently under performing. I won't be using the shots that have terrible artifacts. They are simply not good enough. That is unless I can fix them in post.

Putting the artifacts aside, here are my issues that currently stop the 7Q from being a "production beast";

>> Play back - If I happen to play a shot to the director and then record another shot and then want to play back again, the 7Q spazzes out and plays back random shots. Because I'm playing the last shot available, it looks like I didn't press record on the last take. I was doubting myself the first few times this happened.
>> Last week it simply said "SSD 2 error" for no reason. I tried to use the repair option. Didn't work.
>> I had about 6 shots that were single black frames.
>> 4k raw @ 25fps are randomly being recorded over 2 folders. Problem comes when you're transcoding in Davinci, as it will transcode the first shot then write over it with the second shot, as they both have the same name.
>> Randomly turns off. No battery warning, just a black screen. This is not a battery issue. My FS700 was brand new and I always start off using the brand new Sony battery with the 7Q, as it's the smallest battery.

Mitch, maybe I have a 7Q that was built on a Friday afternoon, I don't know. But there are issues, fact. Simply saying that it's recoded the image faithfully isn't good enough. I can't be wondering if shots have terrible artifacts. Maybe CD could make a call to Sony and find a solution for this?? And play back... well that's happened so many times now that my heart has stopped skipping a beat. But still, would be great to find a fix please.

Prendi, if you are having issues to this degree then I suggest you contact our support desk. The contact info is on our website. It doesn't fall into some corporate abyss, either Andy Mangrum or Dan Keaton will get back to you. We will likely ask that you upload some RAW files via FTP so that we can properly diagnose the first issue and then address the others.

I am very sorry to hear that you are having these issues. While I am happy to try to assist you as best I can here on the forum, for serious issues it is best to go directly to our support system. We're not trying to hide anything; we just want to help you as best we can. DVXUSER is not the place for that.

Please let me know how I can be of further assistance. If you have contacted our support desk and have not received proper attention, let me know directly and I will shepard this through.

I can chime in to the support. I had issues with my 7Q that added up to me having it for a few months but never REALLY using it as a RAW recorder and all. The entire circuit board had to be replaced. I had to pay for shipping out there but I got it back. And it now works as it should. I'm happy with it. So let them know and let them take care of you. Best thing you can do at this point. They are good guys.
