FS7: 7Q first impression

Just got a 7Q from B&H ( before I found out about the 7Q+ w 2 drives included.

Very very nice as a monitor for FS7
. Incredibly easy to use as the menus are instantly obvious and available - Much easier than the Small HD DP7Pro OLED
So far (nighttime inside) the Slog3 LUT looks great and is transmitted to my 17" - also not working yet on the Small HD.
Picture seems to look great as does the Small HD.

I thought that the LUT's were supposed to be 1D and not so good but so far it looks pleasing to me. I'll check again in the daylight.
My only quibbles are with exposure tools:

Zebras - only available from 70% and up -- Duh haven't used a 70% zebra since SD.
Zebras are on white background so you can't see the image behind them - terrible idea- Should see Picture behind Zebras. (same on Small HD)

False Color - I wanted to be able to set my Yellow below 70% as that will be for faces - right ow there is no color or zebra for faces.

MITCH - Requesting
DUAL ZEBRAS set-able to ANY IRE - at least down to 45 . In Slog3 faces want to be at 50%
& get rid of white background
False Color - free the yellow color for IRE down to 45. How about Presets for False color with different Gammas?

Hey How do you turn this thing Off anyway ? I'm just pulling the plug.

Hmm Just noticed Its got old firmware in it - To be Continued....

Hi Lenny,

First off, if you have not already done so please go to the Convergent Design website and register so that you can load in the latest firmware.

Both the Zebras and the False Color tools are getting some improvements in the coming months. We will be doing what you ask and more.

To turn off the dyssey7Q, push the F2 button located on the left side of the case. The front screen labels this as "F2 SHUT DOWN". A window will pop up asking if you really want to shut down. Tap OK and the unit will switch off.

I also suggest you download the latest manual. Enjoy your new tool and you know where to find me if you have any questions.

Mitch, I don't have a convergence SSD or a utility drive.

Can't believe I need to spend $149 just to be able to upgrade software - Now I have a complaint.

Hi Lenny, just curious, what are you using the 7Q for with the FS7? Are you recording ProRes, RAW, etc?

Frankly I don't even want it as a recorder, but rather as a monitor that will handle LUT's and send them to a client monitor.
That can solve a lot if the LUT and waveform issues in CINE EI and HFR. (Basically replace my TV Logic 5.6" with LUT's)
I also really love the idea of being able to see 4 cameras for a multi camera shoot and to switch from it. Haven't tested that yet.
That's why I didn't buy any cards with it.

As a monitor its between this and the Small HD Pro 7 OLED and I gotta say i found the menu system in the Small HD very cumbersome. Also it still won't send the LUT out to a client monitor. That's essential. I also did not find their much touted ability to create your own LUT very useful - bad implementation of the color adjustment features/ It was OK for getting rid of green in fluorescents though. I tried the Small HD LCD also and thought that monitor looked terrible - I was shocked - the whites were green.

Hopefully on Monday I can visit a local rental house to borrow a card for upgrading. Kind of a pain though. Even if I bought one from B&H it would take a week.

For the money i may just switch out for a 7Q+ with the free pair of 256G drives though.

There will be many other uses for the Utility Drive coming.

Give me a hint Mitch.

By the way - mine has v3.10. Is 4.1 the immediate successor or were other changes made in between?
Do I have roughly the same tools for focus LUT s, zebras etc.?

BTW - I don't think I would have tried the 7Q without your informative posts here. thanks

First up we will be implementing custom 3D-LUTs and while serval will be able to be stored on the Odyssey7Q itself, the Utility Drive will act as a repository for as large a library as one could ever want of them. Thousands if not tens of thousands could fit on one. It will also be the tool with which to load the 3D-LUTs onto the Odyssey7Q in the first place.

More coming in the future.

Hi (to the OP). Just wanted to chime in that I also bought an O7 (NOT Q) for ONLY monitoring purposes, and was disappointed as well that you have to get the utility drive at the very least to update firmware. The comfort is that even with that, it's still cheaper than the Small HD DP7 (cheapest model), when you factory in cost of battery plate etc (smallHD requires two pieces to attach batteries, totaling $225 or so, and can only be used with two batteries simultaneously). That was the only other real competitor for me.

Hey Mitch or anyone else that can chime here, some Q's

Does the 7Q+ give me the 240fps in 2K Prores on the FS7, I can't seem to find clear info on this?

Also will I still need the sony extension unit for this ? as well as the Sony license to record on the 7Q+?

I am seeing some nice FS700 and 7Q clips with high speed at 2K but can I get the same on the FS7 ?

I guess I want to know if the 7Q+ will anything more besides the monitor and prores, if I can get higher frame rates at 2K that at least makes it worthwhile

What is the deal with the license, do I have to buy this also ? I remember something like that with the FS700

With 7Q+ and FS7 you can output 4K through the FS7 HDMI and record ProRes 4K on the the Odyssey 7Q+. No back or FS license needed.

To record Raw, you need the Sony back and the FS license, which is $795.

The 240 fps rate is 2K raw. Thus you need the Sony back as well as the FS license from CD. That FS license enables both the FS7 and the FS700 to record Raw.

Mitch a quick question. I bought a 7Q with FS licence used from someone who has upgraded to the 7Q+. He's gone through all the registration steps at his end and I have registered my 7Q on the CD site but have stopped short of entering activation code into the 7Q unit for fear that suddenly that would deactivate the FS licence that was transferred over from the old seller. Is it fine to just go ahead?

Appreciate I should just email support about that but you always respond so quickly on here.

4.10 directly followed 3.10, about 6-7 weeks later.

The monitoring tools are mostly the same, although the new software has an amazing custom frame line generator.

You're going to want the drive anyway. That is how you will load the LUTs into the Odyssey.

To shoot 2K 240p on the on an FS7 & Odyssey7Q, you will need the camera's extension back as well as the FS RAW Record Option on the Odyssey. On the FS7 the extension back is also required. In RAW you can get 4K60p or 2K 240p. In ProRes you can get 4K/UHD up to 30p and 2K/UHD up to 60p.

It should be fine to just go ahead but if you're nervous then wait until Monday. That way if you have any issue there will be someone in the office to assist you.

Currently the FS7 does up to UHD from the HDMI, not 4k.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4K_resolution

"4k" is essentially a generic moniker for images on the order of 4,000 horizontal pixels, give or take. If you want to be specific that you mean 4096x2160, you'd be better off saying "DCI 4k native".

If you have a conversation and only use the term "4k" expect that people may have different interpretations of what that means. I expect in future there will be shoots that get booked for UHD delivery, and shooters mistakenly set the camera to 4096x2160, and the post people end up unhappy. It's going to be confusing.

While that may be true in the consumer world, it would make a lot more sense in the world of acquisition if we all used the same terminology specifically to avoid what you have just mentioned. And lest we forget there is UHD 1 and UHD 2! :)

So 4k and UHD should work as shorthand for us for now. I think/hope.
